The football team went to war with Whitewater last Friday in a battle between two undefeated, highly ranked teams. In the end, No. 8 Mays defeated No. 3 Whitewater 17-14 on a last-second field goal. Mays’ kicker Mambay Kanu was able to hit the game-winning field goal after a muffed punt by Whitewater set up the Raiders on Whitewater’s side of the field. The Wildcats dominated the first half and took a 14-7 lead into the locker room. In the second half, however, the Raiders were able to run the ball at will, going almost a full 99 yards to score and tie the game at 14, setting up the late-game heroics that would ensue. This week the Raiders will host Alexander. … The volleyball team lost its second region match in a row last week, losing in straight games to McIntosh. The team is currently tied with three other teams in the region standings. With the region schedule still young, however, the Lady Raiders could move into a tie for fourth place with a victory on Tuesday over Region 5-AAAA foe Sandy Creek.
