Prince Avenue Christian’s quest for championship greatness did not stop last season when it beat Tallulah Falls in two games to win the Class A Division I championship.
The Wolverines look to be well on track through the first 18 games of the season.
The two-time defending state champions have been dominant through more than half the season, with only three losses against elite teams — Class 2A No. 8 Franklin County, Class 1A-3A Private No. 8 Savannah Christian, and Class 3A No. 2 LaGrange. Their wins have been just as, if not more, impressive. They have won their games by an average of 4.6 runs per game while scoring 10 or more runs six times, including against some of the best teams in the state, such as Class 6A Buford, Class 1A-3A Private No. 6 North Cobb Christian, an avenge victory against Franklin County, and Tattnall Square.
The team is extremely deep, with nine players currently hitting over .300. Most impressively, Judson Hartwell and Kyler Giddens are both hitting .364 in 64 and 52 plate appearances, respectively. On the mound, Hartwell has been just as dominant. In 11 appearances this season, the most on the team, he boasts a 1.05 ERA. In addition to him, the team has two other pitchers with more than five appearances who have an ERA under 2. Pitcher Bryson Towler has a shockingly low 1.27 ERA through seven appearances, earning the win in three of them. The team’s other star starter, Drew Payne, has been just as effective, posting an impressive 1.48 ERA through six appearances while securing the win in four of them.
The Wolverines will face stiff competition in their pursuit of a third straight championship. Teams like Lovett, Providence Christian, and Fellowship Christian will all present tough challenges in the upcoming playoffs. Additionally, the region title won’t be a cakewalk. Franklin County is currently ranked No. 5 in 2A according to GHSA playoff rankings and is the third-ranked public school. They have already defeated Prince Avenue once and lost another game in their three-game series by just one run. Hebron Christian also won’t be an easy opponent, standing at 13-7 with a three-game series still to come.
