PREPS: The latest news on tonight’s basketball playoff games

Tonight, in the first round of the state basketball playoffs, Walton, Berkmar and Campbell all went down in minor upsets. Also, in a GPB webcasted game, Chattahoochee edged Pope on a dramatic last-second three-point play. See our recaps below for more information on these games and more.

In a Class AAAA first round playoff game, Chattahoochee forward Jamie Frost converted a three-point play with 3.1 seconds left as the host Cougars knocked off Pope 57-56.

Pope led much of the game before holding on to a two-point margin with 13 seconds left. But with the clock ticking down, Frost got free underneath to put in the tying shot and then hit nothing but net on the free throw. Frost finished with 13 points, while teammate Jaron Blossomgame had 16 points. Garrett Brown had 26 points for Pope.

Class AAAAA Girls

Norcross 61, Walton 39: Diamond DeShields scored 23 points and pulled in 10 rebounds for the host Lady Blue Devils. Sarah Durdaller had 16 points for Walton.

Class A

St. Francis 73, Hancock Central 47: Keyona Hayes scored a game-high 26 points and Nettie Brown contributed 18 for St. Francis, which improves to 24-3 on the year. Denise Holsey paced Hancock Central with 21 points.

Class AAAAA Boys

Centennial 82 Brookwood 60: The Knights pushed out to a 18-point lead at half en route to the win, their first for new coach Joe Eineker. Centennial senior forward Nathan Harries led all scorers with 20 while Thomas Higginbotham had 14 for the Broncos.

Langston Hughes 48, Harrison 43: The Panthers managed to hang onto a six-point halftime lead thanks to 22 points from Larry Thomas and another from Earl Farnum. Jeremy Presley’s 11 paced Harrison.

Mill Creek 65, Walton 61: Host Walton cut a 15-point deficit to two points late, but Mill Creek got back-to-back steals to preserve the win. Ron Wamer led the Hawks with 16 points.

Milton 68, Central Gwinnett 49: The host Eagles got out to a 15-8 lead after one period and were led by Julian Royal’s 22 points. Royal now has 2,000 points in his career.

Norcross 74, Lassiter 48: Chris Bolden led all scorers with 16 points, while Josiah Moore totaled 15 for the host Blue Devils. Lassiter was led by Niles Clark, who scored 14.

Peachtree Ridge 91, Marietta 84: The Lions outlasted Marietta on Saturday night thanks to 21 points from Shaq Morris. The Blue Devils had three double-digit scorers in the losing effort and was led by Jay Ellis’ 33.

Roswell 57, Berkmar 56: Despite a late surge from No. 1 seed Berkmar, the visiting Hornets held on for the win after leading throughout all four quarters. Roswell Sophomore Sean Brennan led all scorers with 30 points and Brandon Thompson’s 19 paced the Patriots.

Class AAAA

Chattahoochee 70, Chapel Hill 44: Alexis Alexander had 28 points and 16 rebounds while Erika Ford had 20 as the host Lady Cougars rolled past Chapel Hill. Kanesha Looper had 17 for the Lady Panthers.

Jonesboro 78, Greenbrier 36: James White had a triple-double for host Jonesboro with 17 points, 14 rebounds and 11 blocks. Point guard Rasham Suarez had 25 points and nine assists.

Sequoyah 71, Lithia Springs 51: Sequoyah got 28 points from state-leading scorer Sean Tate, as well as double-doubles from three other players. The Chiefs used a 14-2 third-quarter run to pull ahead 42-26.

Class AAA

Allatoona 56, Grady 55 (2OT): Freshman Daniel Fowler, who led host Allatoona with 12 points, hit a last-second driving lay-up for the win. Grady’s Greg Sessions scored a game-high 16 points.

Class AA

South Atlanta 81, Hart Co. 52: Nick Jacobs scored 22 points in just three quarters of action while Rashuad Bell had 18 as the Hornets dominated Hart County.

GAC 66, Elbert County 45: Spartan shooting guard Malcolm Brogdon led all scorers with 21 points on the night, and sophomore A.J. Davis contributed 17. Sergio Harper’s 19 points paced the visiting Blue Devils.

Class A

Paideia 60, Mt. Paran 30: The Pythons were paced by Keenan Palmore’s 29-point, 10-rebound effort, while teammates, Sidki Muwallis and Christian Olsen, contributed 12 points apiece.

Wilcox County 89, Brookstone 57: Wilcox County moved to 22-2 on the year behind 26 points from senior guard Nick Marshall. The Patriots led 44-19 at the half.

Athens Christian 63, Walker 50: After an even first two quarters that ended with the score tied at 24, Athens Christian pulled away from Walker with a dominant second half and 20 points from Garth Brown.

Whitefield Academy 62, Wesleyan 48: The Wolfpack overcame a two-point halftime deficit to capture the victory. Kennard Backman led all Whitefield scorers with 19 points, while the Wolves received 23 from Shane Smith.
