PREPS: GAC sweeps Buford in 6-AA showdown

For the second straight week, we have an upset in the girls “Two for Tuesday”

game, as host No. 6 GAC upset No. 3 Buford 52-43.

Despite being convincingly beaten in early January by the Lady Wolves, GAC (17-7) rebounded at home behind Kristina Nelson’s 17 points and eight rebounds while freshman Briana Cummings had 10.

Buford (19-3) took a 24-21 lead into the half, but the Lady Spartans stormed out of the gates in the second, taking a 27-26 lead almost immediately. By the end of the third perios, GAC had taken a 39-33 lead. The lead expanded to 10 points with less than a minute left and the issue was no longer in doubt.

Tennessee commitments Andraya Carter and Kaela Davis were contained for much of the night, although Carter did have 15 points and eight boards. Davis finished with 13 points, but was in foul trouble for much of the evening.

With the loss, Buford was prevented from clinching the No. 1 seed for the Region 6-AA tournament.

Score 44 member Malcolm Brogdon led the Spartans to a 70-67 victory in the boys game with 30 points and 11 rebounds. No. 2 GAC was also helped by sophomore forward AJ Davis, who had 15 points, four rebounds and two blocks on the night.

The game was back-and-forth all night and featured several lead changes, as Buford jumped out to a 16-10 lead only to see GAC take the lead in the second quarter. The Spartans then went into the locker room up 32-29.

The game remained close through the third period, but GAC held on for a 50-48 lead at the end of three.

In the final period, GAC (19-6) led nearly the entire quarter, although the game was tied on a couple occasions. With two minute left, the Spartans led by four at 66-62 and the game Wolves (16-6) were in desperation mode. Two Brogdon free throws extended the lead to 70-64 with 27.9 seconds left. A Zac Lynn three-pointer trimmed the lead to three, but the Wolves would get no closer.

The Wolves were led by TJ Shipes, who had a double-double with 12 points and 10 boards, while Lynn finished with 14 points of his own.
