PREPS: Buford upsets South Atlanta in quarterfinals

Tonight at the Northwest Georgia Trade and Convention Center in Dalton, Buford pulled what could be called the upset of the GHSA boys state basketball tournament.The Wolves took down perennial power South Atlanta, which had been ranked No. 1 in Class AA for much of the season.

Also winning tonight in quarterfinals action from Dalton was the Buford girls, who romped over Rabun County, the GAC girls and the GAC boys. The Lady Spartans spanked Kendrick 60-36, while their male counterparts came back to defeat East Hall 65-52.

In a Class AA quarterfinal from Dalton, Buford upset South Atlanta in a 47-44 thriller. Senior point guard Alex Flagler nailed a three-pointer with eight seconds left to give the Wolves a 46-44 lead.

After trailing 18-16 at the half, Buford senior guard Zac Lynn would make three straight three-pointers to start the second stanza.

Flagler led Buford with 16 points, 10 of which came in the final quarter. South Atlanta was led by Rashuad Bell’s 13 points.

With the win, Buford advances to the state semifinals Thursday in Macon.

Other Boys Action…

GAC 65, East Hall 52: The Spartans trailed 19-9 at the end of the first and 39-33 at the end of the third, but came out on top. GAC senior Malcolm Brogdon finished with 33 points while Paul Dawson had 10 points and eight assists.

Girls Action…

GAC 60, Kendrick 36: In Dalton, the Lady Spartans exploded for a 21-9 first-quarter lead which turned into a commanding 36-12 halftime advantage. Brianna Cummings had 18 to lead GAC, while Chandler Alverson and Kristina Nelson each had 10.

Buford 67, Rabun County 28: Kaela Davis had 24 points to lead all scorers in the Lady Wolves’ romp. Buford led 23-12 after one period and 38-16 at the half. Krista Dixon had 11 for Rabun County.
