PREP FINAL: Trojans take down Raiders; finals from around the state

Lassiter 42, Walton 28: Lassiter quarterback Hutson Mason completed 24 of 40 pass attempts for 347 yards and threw five touchdown passes to help maintain the Trojans’ undefeated season with a 42-28 win at Walton.

Junior receiver Bo Shaw had a pair of touchdowns for Lassiter (8-0), including a 15-yard touchdown pass with 4:28 left in the game, giving Lassiter a 35-28 lead. Kendall Newsome paced the Trojans with three receptions for 65 yards. He also was one of four Lassiter receivers to score a touchdown.

Mason threw four touchdowns in the first half to help the Trojans build a 28-14 halftime lead. But Walton rallied with a pair of touchdowns in the third quarter to tie the game.

The Raiders, who have lost two straight Region 6-AAAAA games, were led on the ground by senior running back Andre Walkine, who carried the ball 13 times for 6 yards and two touchdowns.

North Gwinnett 24, North Forsyth 6: Quarterback C.J. Uzomah threw for one touchdown and added another on the ground to lead the undefeated Bulldogs to a road victory over the Raiders.

North Gwinnett (8-0) led 17-0 midway through the third quarter when North Forsyth senior Steven Hester—who also added 53 yards on 15 carries—intercepted Uzomah and set the Raiders (5-3) up with great field position. Just as North Forsyth threatened to get back in the game, Bulldogs senior Trey Sims picked up a Raider fumble and returned it for an 83-yard touchdown.

Trailing 24-0 early in the fourth period, quarterback Joey Vicary led the Raiders on an 86-yard touchdown drive that narrowed the gap to 18 points. But that was all North Forsyth could squeeze out of a Bulldog’s defense that has yielded less than 12 points per game this season.

Buford 21, Blessed Trinity 0: Buford’s defense dominated at Blessed Trinity, as the Wolves offense capitalized on a couple of quick strikes and an 18-play, 9:30 drive in the second quarter.

Buford allowed Blessed Trinity beyond the 50-yard line only once in the second half – on a kickoff return – and gave up only 44 yards total offense for the game.

Wolves quarterback Alex Ross hit tight end Kurt Freitag for a 41-yard touchdown pass and running back Seon Jones scored on a 29-yard TD run. Ross ended the long second-quarter drive with a fourth-down bootleg touchdown run from Blessed Trinity 2.

Buford improved to 7-1, 4-1 in Region 6-AA, while Blessed Trinity fell to 5-3, 2-3.

Dacula 23, Brookwood 17: The Falcons rained on Brookwood’s homecoming by dominating for three quarters and withstanding a late Bronco surge.

Dacula’s Rocky Capobianco scored first on a 1-yard sneak after a six-play, 75-yard drive highlighted by a 63-yard run by Aashad Holloway (nine carries, 95 yards). Chase Loyd added a field goal and Brookwood missed two field-goal attempts in the first half.

The Broncos started the second half with a 12-play, 44-yard drive which resulted in a Travis Falcon 40-yard field goal. But Dacula’s Skyler Richardson intercepted a Bronco pass and returned it 44 yards for a touchdown in the third and another 1-yard touchdown sneak by Capobianco put the score at 23-3.

Brookwood mounted a late flurry with two late touchdowns, the second of which was a 1-yard sneak by quarterback Ben McLane after a successful onside kickoff  pulled the Broncos within six points.

Newton 24, Douglass 7: Bart Lindsey had two first-half touchdowns to spark the Rams to their first-ever win over Douglass.

Lindsey, who had two interceptions a week earlier against Greenbrier, picked off Joshua Thurston’s throw on third-and-16 and returned it 30 yards for a 10-0 Rams’ lead with 4:08 remaining in the half.

The Astros (1-7, 1-4 2-AAAAA) then punted back to Newton (5-3, 3-2) and returner Lindsey, who caught the ball at the Astros’ 33 and ran down the left sideline for another score less than two minutes later.

Douglass scored the game’s first offensive touchdown when Marcus Newsome scored on a 2-yard run with 33.4 seconds left in the third quarter.

The Astros had 155 yards of offense, threw three interceptions and lost 80 yards on 12 penalties.

Newnan 26, Pebblebrook 0: The fifth-ranked Cougars shook off three first-half turnovers on a slick field and converted two Falcons fumbles into touchdowns to win their 26th straight regular season game and shut out their fifth opponent of the season.

Quarterback Lendell Arnold broke free for a 63-yard touchdown early in the second quarter and Nick Hill scored a pair of 2-yard touchdowns as Newnan improved to 8-0 and remained atop the Region 4-AAAAA standings.

The Cougars defense gave up just 103 yards and forced five Pebblebrook turnovers, the first of which Trevor Tanner returned 40 yards for a touchdown on a fumble recovery. The Falcons fell to 5-3.

Collins Hill 35, Mill Creek 0: Taylor Heinicke threw for three touchdowns and Charles Perkins ran for two more as the Eagles (7-1, 5-1 in 7-AAAAA) coasted. Heinicke hit Cameron Nolan for a 9-yard score on Collins Hill’s first possession, then Perkins broke loose for a 57-yard TD run on the next possession for the Eagles.

Heinicke connected with Jeff Glover from 23 yards out in the second quarter, then hit Nolan with another 9-yard touchdown pass late in the third period. Perkins capped the scoring with an 8-yard run on the second play of the fourth quarter.

Mill Creek (3-5, 2-4) had its slim playoff chances end with the loss.

Griffin 51, Jonesboro 0: The Bears (8-0, 6-0), ranked No. 1 in AAAA, dominated the Cardinals (2-6, 2-5) in a rain-soaked Region 4-AAAA game at Tara Stadium. It was the fourth shutout of the season for Griffin, which has given up only 38 points this season.

The Bears led 30-0 at halftime and ran only six offensive plays from their own half of the field.The Cardinals’ offense did not get a first down until the game’s final four minutes and drove the ball into Griffin territory only twice.
