PREP FINAL: Friday games avoid rain, bring upsets

It was another damp Friday around the state, but this time the rain and lightning would hold off enough to allow most of the games in Georgia to finish on time. Here’s a few of the notable results from last night.

Class 5A No. 1 Grayson survived another relatively close win, defeating Region 8 rival Brookwood 22-12. The Rams move to 7-0 on the season. In other 5A action, Kell outlasted Region 6 opponent Centennial in overtime, as a missed extra point cost the Knights in a 34-33 win. It was all Lowndes in the Winnersville Classic; the Vikings won a blowout 57-15 over Valdosta.

The marquee 4A matchup was between No. 1 Griffin and No. 5 North Clayton. The Bears of Griffin would hold on to take this contest by the score of 26-14 to hold onto their unbeaten record and top spot in the classification. Newly ranked Hiram went on to defeat South Paulding 26-10 on Friday evening, moving to a surprising 6-0 record on the year.

In 3A news, Flowery Branch experienced its second loss of the season, this time to North Hall, 37-34. The 2008 runners-up drop to 4-2 on the year. Peach County continues to rack up the wins with a 24-13 victory over defending champion Cairo, which drops to 3-3 on the year; Peach, ranked No. 2 behind an unbeaten Gainesville squad, is 6-0.

Class 2A No. 1 Calhoun held off Chattooga 27-12 in one of the games affected by lightning. And Single-A’s top-ranked team, Wesleyan, took it Prince Avenue Christian 56-7.
