McEachern started the season with a dominating 42-32 win over Brookwood in the Corky Kell Classic that wasn’t even as close as the final score suggested. But in the teams’ second meeting of the year, McEachern’s powerful offense was stifled by Brookwood in a 20-10 upset. The No. 4-seeded Broncos shut down Rajaan Bennett and the Indians, while Brookwood RB Julian Suber rumbled for three touchdowns. McEachern finishes the year at 10-1 after an undefeated regular season, and Brookwood moves on to the second round of the playoffs.
Brookwood’s Region 8-AAAAA counterpart Grayson, the league champion, got a scare from No. 1 seed Marietta in its first-round game. Grayson took a 21-14 decision, holding Marietta to only three first downs in the game. The Blue Devils got their 14 points off a quick drive highlighted by a 54-yard pass play and a kickoff return for a touchdown. Grayson RB Ean Pemberton didn’t play much in the second half due to a shoulder injury.
Region 8-AAAAA went 3-1 on the night, with the only being Dacula’s defeat to Woodstock, but Region 7 lost two teams to Region 6 foes. Collins Hill went down to Roswell in a 30-27 barnburner that had to be decided in two overtimes, and North Forsyth got smoked by Lassiter 62-37. North started out with a 14-0 lead over Lassiter, but Trojans QB Hutson Mason got going after a tough first drive, finishing with 443 yards and seven touchdowns.
In our GPB/Score Atlanta webcast game of the week, Marist outlasted Sprayberry at home, 14-7, to win its 28th straight home playoff game, a streak that dates back to 1994. The running of Marist QB Andy Perez and FB Matt Connors helped the War Eagles past a pesky Yellow Jackets team from Cobb County. Elsewhere in Class 4A, Marist’s Region 6 mate Southwest DeKalb routed Northwest Whitfield 40-3. SWD coach Buck Godfrey tied former Commerce head coach Ray Lamb with 250 career wins. The Panthers, who many consider the favorites in 4A, will move on to play Clarke Central next Friday.
In other noteworthy results, Newnan pulled after from Valdosta after the half, winning 28-9 over the Wildcats, who may have played their last game with Rick Tomberlin as head coach. Tomberlin was fired in the middle of the season, but allowed to coach the rest of the year. However, Tomberlin, among others, remain hopeful he will be reinstated before next season. Valdosta’s Region 1-AAAAA mate Colquitt County continued its turnaround season with a 10-0 win at Westlake.
