Playoff lessons learned from the second round

From the Metro-area…

Cobb’s title chances may have taken a huge hit with McEachern, Marietta, South Cobb and Hillgrove all being shown the door, but Lassiter and Walton are two big bullets left in the gun. The Trojans pulled off their second straight upset on the road to earn the right to face ML King in the next round. Lassiter actually has the secondary to contain the ML King receivers so this should be an intense matchup. … Meanwhile, Walton just keeps pounding the rock with Tyren Jones, who had five more scores in a blowout win over South Cobb. The Raiders defense can also boast the Blaylock twins to shut down future opponents. … And don’t forget Allatoona in AAA. The Bucs defense gave up just one score, and the offense, led by Miles Jones’ two scores, found just enough points to win. Ohio State did the same thing back in 2002-03. … It was not a good weekend in AAAAA for Gwinnett County. Brookwood lost in overtime and North Gwinnett fell at home to Colquitt County on GPB TV. Grayson did thump Lowndes thanks in large part to Robert Nkemdiche to give the county its last and best shot at a title in AAAAA, though Dacula could continue its special run. … What more can you say about West Forsyth? The defense held all-state back Kenyan Drake to under 40 yards rushing. The running game offered a pair of 100-yard rushers. The quarterback picked his spots for success. … Lovejoy is making its case for best defense in AAAA. After posting seven shutouts through its first 11 games, Lovejoy’s defense rescued it against Kell by returning a turnover for a score and forcing another fumble late in the game to seal a victory. East Paulding and Tucker may feel they have superior defenses, but Lovejoy’s is driving deeper into the playoffs.

From across the state …

While Region 1 rivals Coffee, Lowndes and Valdosta fell by the wayside in the playoffs, Colquitt County posted an impressive 17-7 win at North Gwinnett Friday night. Rush Propst now has his team in the quarterfinals for the third year in a row. … Next up for Colquitt County is a trip to No. 1 Camden County. The Wildcats have rolled through the competition thus far in the playoffs after dominating their region. In fact, Camden County has beaten every opponent by at least 34 points since a nine-point win over Glenville (OH) the second week of the season. It will be interesting to see if the soft schedule affects the Wildcats against battle-hardened Colquitt County. … No. 3 Lincoln County visits No. 1 Savannah Christian in a juicy Class A quarterfinal. According to GHSFHA.org, SCPS is the only program that Lincoln County hasn’t defeated in more than one meeting. Savannah Christian is 2-0 all time against the Red Devils. … No. 7 Peach County travels to No. 4 Carrollton Friday night in a great matchup of Class AAA powers. The two programs have combined to win 10 state titles and have each been in the thick of the Class AAA state title mix in recent years. While Carrollton has won seven state titles, the Trojans have just one since 1974 and none since 1998. The Peach County Trojans, meanwhile, have won all three of theirs since 2005. … Warner Robins rolled on to the quarterfinals with an impressive 20-6 win at defending Class AAAA champion Chattahoochee. The Demons now travel to metro Atlanta again, this time to face No. 8 East Paulding. … In another intriguing Class AAAA matchup, No. 3 Northside-Warner Robins will face surprising Tri-Cities, which shut out Pope 35-0 on the road last week. With the domination of the Greyhounds, the Bulldogs won their 10th game for the first time in the 24-year history of the school. It will also be the first quarterfinals appearance in school history.
