PIGSKIN IS BACK: GPB and Metro PCS team up to kick off High School Football

Love high school football so much that you just can’t wait for the season to start? Then tune in to Georgia Public Broadcasting (GPB Media) on Saturday, Aug. 20 as it broadcasts the 2011 Metro PCS Corky Kell Classic to help kick off the football season. The Metro PCS Corky Kell Classic will feature four football games between rival schools which will air live on GBP TV and online from the Georgia Dome.

The 2011 Metro PCS Corky Kell Classic will feature eight high school football teams (four teams from Cobb County and four from Gwinnett County). These are the same teams who played in last year’s, but this year the match-ups are different. The games will be hosted and commentated by a variety of sports talk regulars. Games 1 and 3 will be hosted by Matt Stewart and Chuck Oliver of Comcast Sports Southeast, while Gil Tyree and Jon Nelson will take over the broadcasting booth for Games 2 and 4. Mark Harmon will provide commentary between games while Niki Noto and Fletcher Proctor will cover from the sidelines.

Aug. 20, 2011

11:45 a.m. — Grayson vs. Kell

2:30 p.m. — Brookwood vs. Lassiter

5:30 p.m. — North Gwinnett vs. McEachern

8:30 p.m. — Peachtree Ridge vs. Walton

“For 20 years now, the Metro PCS Corky Kell has been the official kickoff of the football season. It is a tremendous day with eight of the best schools in the state involved and for the first time we will be putting them on statewide television,” said I.J. Rosenberg, sports director at GPB. “We feel with the games going on TV and the new relationship between GPB Sports and the Metro PCS Corky Kell Classic, these games will become one of the premier high school events in the country.”

Following the Classic, GPB will air 15 high school games this fall every Friday at 8 PM starting Aug. 26. Additionally, there will be another 15 games streaming live at www.gpb.org/sports starting Aug. 26 at 7:30PM, along with an interactive chat. And the the Metro PCS Corky Kell Classic and all televised games will be simulcast on 790 The Zone.

And it goes without saying that GPB will wrap up another exciting high school football season with a live broadcast of the 2011 high school State Championship finals, as part of GPB’s 20-year partnership with the Georgia High School Association (GHSA).
