The Parkview Panthers baseball team bested their regional rival Newton Rams 12-0 Monday afternoon in the first game of a three-game series.
The Panthers scored three runs in the first inning, one run in the second inning, two runs in the third inning and then proceeded to explode for six runs in the fourth inning.
Once again, senior starting pitcher Mason Brown gets the win with a perfect ERA of 0.00, having pitched four innings, allowing only one hit and striking out eight batters.
“We need him to continue to throw the ball well for us, being our No. 1 starter, and moving into next week, the last region series,” Panthers head coach Chan Brown said. “Last night was just a night where we needed him to show up and throw a lot of strikes and get people out, so he did that and that helped set the tone for the entire game.”
Notable performers for the Panthers on offense include senior Ryan Spikes, who had three runs, three hits, two RBIs and one home run as well as senior Cade Sadler, who had two runs, two hits, seven RBIs, two home runs and one sacrifice fly.
As a team, the Panthers had 13 hits overall. Coach Brown is really impressed with how his team played on both sides of the ball and wants his team to continue to improve and get better as the playoffs come around.
“Kind of been an up and down year for us, with certain things as far as hitting and pitching, so we’re just trying to get more consistent in the last two weeks as we go into the playoffs,” coach Brown said.
With this win, the Panthers move to 14-10 overall and 5-2 in Class 7A Region 4. They extended their winning streak to two games while extending the Rams’ losing streak to eight games.
With the playoffs just around the corner, the Panthers, the No. 1 team in their region, have five region games left in the regular season and can’t afford to lose any of them.
“The big thing right now is just showing up every day and being the team that we’re capable of being,” coach Brown said. “There’s been times this year that we haven’t played very well because we just didn’t show up and play and we have to get off the bus and make sure that we’re showing up with the right energy and right fundamentals and play the game of baseball the right way.”
The Panthers have two more games this week against Newton: one on Wednesday at 5:55 p.m. and one on Friday at 7:00 p.m.
