PANTHER PROWL: Moore signs with Freedom; excitement builds for season-opener

While I was a little surprised when Ryan Moore went undrafted back in June in the MLB amateur draft, I am happy to report that he has signed a professional contract with the Florence Freedom in the Frontier League. There, he joins former teammate Will Palmer on the Freedom pitching staff. Ryan is best remembered for being the pitcher of record in sending the Panthers to their first-ever CAA Championship game during his junior season in 2009, a win over No. 27 George Mason. In 30 appearances as a Panther, Moore posted an overall record of 10-4 with 121 strikeouts. He becomes the ninth former Panther to currently be playing professional baseball. Still no word on Bradley Logan and Carl Moniz and their future baseball plans.

The Panther football team returns to the practice field on August 4 to continue getting prepared for the inaugural season. I had a chance to talk with one of the so-called veterans of the team, center Ben Jacoby. “The excitement is definitely building. We’re excited for our opening game against Shorter. The next big thing for us is camp (fall camp). We’re ready to start the two-a-days and to get back in the pads and start hitting it up. The biggest thing is that we have an opportunity that most teams that have an established program don’t have and, for us, we’re just going to take advantage of that the best way we can and go out there and define Georgia State football in our first season.”

Georgia State begins play on September 2 when they host Shorter College at the Ga. Dome.

Women’s golf graduate assistant coach Jackie Szymoniak has been promoted to full-time assistant coach to the team. She will aid head coach Cathy Mant in guiding the program, developing talent and coaching the team.

“I’m really excited that Jackie is the first full-time assistant women’s golf coach at Georgia State,” Mant said. “She has been working diligently all year as our grad assistant. She really brings a lot of personal experience through her college competition and through the Duramed Futures Tour.”
