PANTHER PROWL: Football players attend Pigskin Preview in Macon

In what has become an annual event at the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame in Macon, the Pigskin Preview features a gathering of all the college football coaches and from across the state. It’s a free-for-all opportunity for the print and electronic media to talk college football with the coaches and a couple of players from each school. Coach Curry along with tight end Emmanuel Ogbuehi and linebacker Mark Hogan made the trek and answered questions about expectations for year two of Panther football. “Our most important goal is to become a consistent football team,” said Curry, whose squad posted a 6-5 record in its inaugural season. “Last season, we played very well at times, but we seldom put together four solid quarters. We never quit and we almost always came back in the fourth quarter, but in some games we were too far behind to catch up. We learned how painful it is to come close at the end but get beat because we didn’t play well early. I want us to be the same full-speed football team every play, every quarter, every Saturday.”

Georgia State football kicks off the season September 2 in the Georgia Dome vs. Clark Atlanta.

NATIONAL RECOGNITION …

Meanwhile, Panther senior Jake Muasau has been named to the College Football Performance Awards FCS Preseason Watch List. Last season, Muasau, a 6-foot-1, 243 pound linebacker, registered 28 solo tackles, including 8.5 tackles for loss, four sacks, one interception and three pass breakups. He was voted Most Valuable Defensive Player and Outstanding Outside Linebacker for GSU’s inaugural season.

Off the court, men’s basketball coach Ron Hunter will travel halfway around the world on Thursday to Nigeria, for a week of distributing shoes and hope with Samaritan’s Feet. The group hopes to distribute more than 85,000 pairs of shoes in the African country.

“Our goal is to help children everywhere,” continued Hunter. “This trip will allow us to return to where the idea for Samaritan’s Feet basically started. I hope that we can be as successful on this trip as we have in the past.”
