PANTHER STRENGTH: Pollard named head strength coach for Panthers

Heading into the second football season, one of the areas that was targeted for expansion was strength and conditioning. Following a national search, Ben Pollard has been named Assistant Director of Athletics for Speed, Strength and Conditioning. In this newly created position, Pollard will work directly with the Panther football program while overseeing strength and conditioning for all 18 sports. Before coming to Georgia State, he served as head strength and conditioning coach at Texas State University. That followed a one-year stint at Vandegrift High School in Austin, Texas. He has also had stints at Mississippi State, Texas A&M, Alabama and TCU.

“An outstanding strength and conditioning program is absolutely essential to the success of Georgia State athletics,” said Athletics Director Cheryl Levick. “As our overall athletics program has grown, we needed to add additional staff and expertise in this area. Ben brings the knowledge and experience to help our student-athletes in all sports reach their full potential.”

GOLF NEWS …

Congratulations to golfer Charlotte Lorentzen and track and field standout Yolanda Berryhill, who have both been named Colonial Athletic Association Scholar-Athlete’s of the Year for their respective sports. Lorentzen, a junior from Soroe, Denmark, earns the CAA Scholar Athlete of the Year in women’s golf for the second straight year. She is also the league’s two-time Golfer of the Year. The CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-District selection maintains a 3.82 grade point average in journalism. Berryhill, a senior from Leesburg, Ga., won conference titles in the discus and shot put and was honored as the CAA Most Valuable Performer in Field Events as she led the Panthers to their first CAA championship. She sports a 3.74 GPA in exercise science and was named to the CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-District III first team.

I had lost track of former Panther basketball player Ousman Krubally, but recently found out that he is playing in England for the BA London Leopards. The numbers posted showed him averaging 22.5 points and 13 rebounds per game and he was apparently the runner-up for EBL Player of the Year honors.
