Kennesaw State football has been the hot topic on campus for many years now. On Nov. 16, the students will finally know whether or not their school will get a team. The vote took place on Owl Express, which is the student registration forum. The vote was from Nov. 8-14, which gave students ample time to make a decision. Kennesaw is requiring an extra $100 per semester to start a football program, which would be included on students tuition. There are differing opinions on whether KSU should start a football program.
Those that are for the program, support the idea of the football team and know the potential problems it will bring. The inclusion of a KSU football program would bring notoriety and a face to what is a continually growing school. A football team would bring students from all over the country and would basically put Kennesaw on national radar. When Georgia State began a program, their name was all over newspapers and sports sites, including ESPN.com. Because of the attention to the school, that would help students with degrees from KSU because of the notoriety of the school.
Those that are against the program have an understanding of the problems with the inclusion of a football team and the difficulties for a small community to grow. Most of the fees students will pay for the football program will be paid as students are in the final years of school at Kennesaw and will have no ability to play/enjoy the team. Another potential problem is the size of Kennesaw. It is already a very busy location with traffic almost everywhere around campus at any time of the day. The problem is the same as with the new soccer stadium. It basically closes down George Busbee Parkway, which is where the stadium is located. It is very difficult to navigate near that area with Town Centre Mall and the KSU Soccer Stadium being in the same location. Where would the KSU football stadium be with so many businesses in Kennesaw? If they were able to use the soccer stadium as well, it might not be as much of a problem, but that will be up to the football committee. Only time will tell if Kennesaw can handle a football team, or if they will get one.
