The Kennesaw State University Lady Owls defeated the Campbell Camels Monday night 71-60. The Lady Owls lead the entire game with junior guard Angie Smith and sophomore guard Ashley “Three-Point” Holliday leading the scoring over half of the Lady Owls points.
The defense played their part as well with sophomore forward getting 11 rebounds and sophomore guard Chelcey Farrar getting eight rebounds.
“Today we played our best complete game,” head coach Colby Tilley said. “We kept playing the second half hard and didn’t fold whenever we weren’t shooting well. When these things happen, good things will happen on the court.”
The first half of the Lady Owls ended with the Lady Owls led the Campbell Camels with a score of 42 to 27. Smith led scoring with 16 points, six of which were 3-pointers. Holliday had 14 points in the first half with 12 of those coming from 3-pointers.
“If you work hard and keep working while you’re tired,” Smith said. “You keep working harder because the coaching staff will carry you off the floor if they need to in the end.”
If the Atlantic Sun tournament were to start today, the Lady Owls would go into the tournament as an eighth seed.
KSU Men outwork Camels, 78-64
The Owls overcame a rocky first half to defeat the Campbell Camels 78-64. Sophomore guard Markeith Cummings and sophomore forward LaDaris Green took control of the end of the first half to start a run that would win them the game.
“We came out flat,” head coach Tony Ingle said. “But, we battled back and tied them at half time.”
The Owls played from behind the entire first half and started off slow on defense and offense. At the beginning of the first half the Owls were not getting offensive or defensive rebounds, but with key free throws by Cummings, 5 -for-7, and a couple of spectacular plays including a breath-taking dunk the Owls pulled back to be tied 34-34 at the half. Green also played a huge role in the first half comeback and had seven rebounds and eight points during the first half.
It was a back and forth battle between the Owls and the Camels during the beginning of the second half causing 12 total lead changes in the game. Senior guard Kelvin McConnell hit the three point shot that would seal the game for the Owls. This shot was also McConnell’s 200th three pointer in his career with the Owls.
“This wouldn’t have been possible without coach Ingle allowing me to be on the team,” McConnell said. “I had the chance to fulfill a goal I set for myself.”
The win snapped a five-game losing streak and the Owls are looking to get back to work to stay in contention for the Atlantic Sun tournament.
“We’ve got wood to cut to get to the tournament,” Ingle said. “If we work hard enough we can get there.”
