Calvary Day 32, Aquinas 13
How the game was won: In a rematch of the 2013 Class A Private state championship game, Calvary Day would score a touchdown on both sides of the ball in the first half for a 12-0 lead. After an Aquinas touchdown, the Cavaliers answered with three rushing touchdowns in the second half. Veteran head coach Rick Tomberlin has opened his first season with Calvary Day 3-0 with a 107-13 scoring advantage.
Top Performers: Salvador Calderon ran in two of the Cavaliers’ four rushing touchdowns. Nolan Smith and Darius Kelly also ran in Calvary Day touchdowns.
Etowah 28, Newnan 20
How the game was won: Visiting Etowah overcame a 17-14 halftime deficit to take a 28-17 lead in the fourth quarter on a Tyray Devezin four-yard touchdown run.
Top performers: Devezin rushed 20 times for 158 yards and his fourth-quarter touchdown. Etowah quarterback Patrick Ferris had a one-yard rush in the second quarter and an 11-yard touchdown pass to Blake Jones in the third. Jones also had an interception on defense. Alan Michael Harris scored the game’s first touchdown on a one-yard rush for the Eagles.
Jefferson County 38, Washington-Wilkes 6
How the game was won: Sophomore Jaden Jenkins hit Ja’Darius Hector for a 70-yard touchdown to give host Jefferson County a 7-0 lead. Junior C.J. Hales added a 36-yard touchdown pass to Hector to increase the lead to 14-0 and Jimmy Thomas ran in a Warriors touchdown to fuel the rout. Jenkins connected with Hector again on a 62-yard completion to make it 28-0 and Jenkins ran in a 31-yard touchdown minutes later to increase the lead to 35-0. Evans Hodges added a 31-yard field goal to make it 38-6.
Top Performers: Ja’Darius Hector caught three touchdown passes (70, 36, 62) while quarterback Jaden Jenkins finished with two passing touchdowns and a 31-yard touchdown run. Evans Hodges was 5-5 on PAT’s and kicked a 31-yard field goal.
Prince Avenue 47, Towns County 13
How the game was won: Following a 7-0 overtime victory a week ago, Prince Avenue poured on the points against Towns County, jumping out to a 47-0 lead before allowing two late fourth quarter scores.
Top Performers: Grant Roland tossed three touchdowns, connecting with Noah Campbell (24 yards), Andrew Bray (16 yards) and Christian Parrish (32 yards). Thomas Huff scored on runs of 2, 1 and 9 yards. Parrish tacked on a 44-yard pick six.
Greenbrier 34, Harlem 9
How the game was won: With the win, Greenbrier moves to 3-0 for the first time since 1997 and with the loss, Harlem has still never beaten Greenbrier in school history.
Top Performers: JQ Brown scored on runs of 5 and 44 yards. John Waters ran in a 5-yard score to give Greenbrier a 14-0 lead after one. Talon Godfrey recorded a 75-yard pick-six.
West Hall 41, Jackson County 0
How the game was won: Tyrese Osborne overwhelmed Jackson County on the ground with four rushing touchdowns.
Top Performers: Tyrese Osborne scored on runs of 5, 45, 1 and 3 yards. Michael Thompson tacked on a 4-yard score.
Cedar Shoals 40, North Oconee 7
How the game was won: Cedar Shoals has raced out to their best start since 2007, beginning this season 3-0 in Coach Leroy Ryals’ first year.
Top Performers: Osiris Walker scored on touchdown runs of one and five yards. Aakeem Glenn tossed a 14-yard touchdown to Stavion Stevenson and a 25-yarder to Snipe Hall. Jerphari Colbert found the end zone from six yards out and on a 78-yard run.
Cartersville 31, Westlake 0
How the game was won: Cartersville pitched a shutout and Trevor Lawrence orchestrated the Canes offense to blow out win.
Top Performers: Trevor Lawrence completed 18-of-26 passes for 295 yards and three touchdowns. JKobe Orr caught a 33-yard score, Darrien Poellnitz a 2-yarder and Avery Showell a 39-yard touchdown pass. Trey Creamer kicked off the scoring with a 2-yard run. Jonathan Cruz sank a 27-yard field goal.
Athens Academy 19, Athens Christian 12
How the game was won: Athens Academy held off a late Athens Christian surge. Matt Moseley and Peyton Bowles supplied the Spartans with touchdowns.
Top Performers: Athens Academy was staked to an early 6-0 lead thanks to field goals from Drew Byus of 37 yards and 35 yards. Matt Moseley found Ed Ferguson on a 7-yard strike and Peyton Bowles rumbled in for a 1-yard score to give the Spartans a 19-0 halftime lead. Terrell Mattox and Richard Jibunor sparked the Athens Christian offense before running out of time. Mattox hit Jibunor for a 25-yard score in the third before hooking up again on a 90-yard bomb with 6:53 left in the fourth.
East Jackson 28, Oglethorpe County 14
How the game was won: The Eagles clinched their first 2-1 start since 2011 with the win over Oglethorpe County.
Top Performers: Josh Adair ignited the scoring, running in a 40-yard quarterback keeper. Kentay Rakestraw scored on a 12-yard run to make it 14-0 heading into the second quarter. Adair scored once more on a 3-yard run and Nathan Elrod put East Jackson up 28-7 with a 45-yard run at the 9:03 mark of the second quarter.
Peach County 38, Perry 6
How the game was won: Peach County took a 14-0 lead into the half and pushed it to 38-0 before allowing a late Perry score.
Top Performers: Kearis Jackson got Peach County on the board with a 13-yard touchdown run. Antonio Gilbert accounted for two touchdowns, a 10-yard keeper and a 46-yard touchdown pass to Devontae Howard. Trevon Woolfolk added a 41-yard score and Shamarcus Redding returned a fumble 25 yards. Mitchell Fineran wrapped up the scoring with a 33-yard field goal.
Dalton 43, Sonoraville 7
How the game was won: Kyric McGowan rushed for three scores in the Catamounts rout of Sonoraville.
Top Performers: Kyric McGowan punched in scores of 3, 5 and 1-yard. Keith Adams added a 3-yard touchdown run. Ivan Mora sank a 47-yard field goal to go ahead 31-7. JP Tighe connected with Zek Cobb for a 63-yard touchdown strike and Chandler Starks chipped in a 7-yard rushing score.
Stratford Academy 36, Atkinson County 19
How the game was won: Stratford Academy rebounded from last week’s 13-3 defeat against Landmark Christian by overpowering Atkinson County after entering the second quarter tied at 7.
Top Performers: Russell Mole scored two touchdowns. Noah Hill tossed a touchdown pass to Trey Giles. Ames Jamison and Lance Franklin both found the end zone. Jake Jamison booted a field goal with three minutes left. Defensively, Jamie O’Quinn added an interception and Tobe Umerah blocked an extra point for the Eagles.
Darlington 28, Heard County 14
How the game was won: Darlington fell behind 14-0 against Ohio State-commit Emory Jones and Heard County, but the Tigers clawed their way back into the game behind Tijai Whatley before securing the win.
Top Performers: Heard County took an early lead behind a Damion Hart 47-yard interception return on Darlington’s first offensive play of the game. Emory Jones made it 14-0 with a 10-yard toss to Jaden Moreland. Darlington made its move in the second quarter as Tijai Whatley scored on a 1-yard run and later followed it up with a 59-yard scamper just before the half. Elijah McKoy made it 21-14 at the 8:41 mark of the third quarter on a 20-yard run. Whatley’s 5-yard touchdown run with 4:42 left to play proved to be enough for Darlington to earn a signature victory.
Valdosta 42, Tift County 13
How the game was won: Jacques Berrian set the tone with a 97-yard interception return for a touchdown for visiting Valdosta to the open scoring. The Wildcats carried the lead and rushed out to a 35-13 halftime edge.
Top performers: Valdosta quarterback Hunter Holt was 8-of-9 passing for 142 yards and two touchdowns, a 21-yarder to Damarrias Morrow in the second quarter and a 17-yarder to Jayce Rogers in the third. Holt also rushed 17 times for 93 yards and touchdowns of six and 11 yards. Jeremiah Proctor had a four-yard rushing score in the first quarter. Tift County QB Griffin Collier was 18-of-34 passing for 225 yards.
Alexander 69, South Paulding 7
How the game was won: Daetrich Harrington ran wild and the Cougar defense and special teams dominated as Alexander overwhelmed South Paulding. Along with Harrington’s three touchdowns, the Cougars returned an interception for a touchdown and returned a blocked punt for six.
Top Performers: Daetrich Harrington rushed for 217 yards and three touchdowns on 13 carries. Mason Wood finished 7-of-12 for 110 yards and three scores. RaeRae Randolph caught three passes for 50 yards and a touchdown. Chris Farrell caught one pass for a 26-yard touchdown.
Houston County 58, Veterans 27
How the game was won: Five-star quarterback Jake Fromm found Eli Watson for a 40-yard touchdown less than two minutes into the game. Veterans’ Rochelle Dinkins answered with a goal line touchdown run and tied the game at 7-7 after the first quarter. Fromm tossed touchdown passes to his younger brother Tyler and Amari Colbert to give the Bears a 21-7 lead with just over two minutes left in the half. Amarrian Brown cut the lead to 21-14 with :43 seconds left in the half with a 1-yard touchdown run, but Fromm fired a 60-yard touchdown pass to Jaeven West with four seconds left in the half to push it to 28-14. Fromm opened the second half with his second touchdown pass to Watson but Veterans closed out the quarter with a Leyton Pinckney touchdown pass to Dinkins to maintain a two-score game (35-20). In the fourth quarter, Fromm hit Colbert for the duos second touchdown pass of the game to make it 41-21 and Veterans returned the ensuing kickoff 72 yards for a touchdown (41-27). Fromm completed his seventh touchdown pass on a shovel pass to Jaeven West with 8:51 left and the Bears closed out the game with a field goal and Branden Smith punt return touchdown.
Top Performers: Jake Fromm threw seven touchdown passes and tallied 492 passing yards before being pulled late in the fourth quarter.
Glynn Academy 56, Camden County 7
How the game was won: Glynn Academy got two touchdown passes from DeeJay Dallas as the Red Terrors beat Camden County on the road, their first win over the Wildcats since 1988.
Top performers: Randon Jernigan scored on a 60-yard run and a 44-yard reception from Dallas. Tyler Grant and Kendall Cross each scored twice as well, Grant on runs of four and 78 yards and Cross on runs of five and four yards. Dallas’s other TD pass went to Andrew Delaney for 11 yards. PJ Fulton had an interception return for a touchdown of 31 yards.
