We are counting down to National Signing Day 2014 by putting the spotlight on 25 of Metro Atlanta’s top prospects as they choose their college destinations. These athletes will be recognized for their outstanding varsity careers throughout Score Atlanta’s record breaking coverage of the Peach State’s signees. #NSDFrenzy
Grant Haley, a standout at Lovett on both sides of the football, registers at 5-foot-10, 170 pounds. Haley played running back and cornerback for the Lions while also returning kicks. He rushed for more than 1,500 yards as a senior while accounting for 27 touchdowns (24 rush, two receiving, one punt return). On defense he had six interceptions and two fumble recoveries in 2013. Haley led Lovett to its first football state championship since 1970. He is a two-sport star at Lovett, also roaming center field and batting leadoff for the 2013 state championship baseball team.
Haley projects as a cornerback and kick returner in college. He does not have ideal size for the next level, but he makes up for it with elite speed. He has been clocked at 4.44 in the 40-yard dash.
The Atlanta native has committed to Penn State, where his mother attended college. He originally committed to Vanderbilt last summer only to change his mind after the departure of former Commodores’ head coach James Franklin. Haley is now following Franklin to Happy Valley. Haley could challenge for playing time right away on a relatively young Penn State squad. Immediate contributions in the nickel formation on defense and via kick and punt returns on special teams would not come as a big surprise.
