Northwest Whitfield’s boys soccer team victorious in penalty kicks Tuesday, eyeing deep playoff run

Top-ranked Northwest Whitfield’s boys soccer team is 10-1 and coming off a 4-3 victory in penalty kicks against Gilmer Tuesday after ending regulation tied at 1-1.

The Bruins entered the match having lost to Calhoun 4-2 in penalty kicks Thursday after ending regulation tied at 1-1. It was nice for the team to meet the same challenge and alter the result in their favor with large matches left on their schedule.

The Bruins – who have never won a state championship – have a late-season schedule to prepare for a deep postseason run. Northwest Whitfield will play host to Allatoona Thursday, Class 4A No. 1 Dalton on April 8, Class 5A No. 1 River Ridge on April 10, Coahulla Creek on April 15 and Rome on April 18 to end the regular season.

On the girls side of 3A soccer, top-ranked Jefferson is 10-2 and 4-0 in Region 8-3A after moving past Monroe Area 9-0 Tuesday. The Dragons will play at West Hall Tuesday, Class 6A No. 2 Buford on April 3, Clarke Central on April 16 and a regular season closing trek to Class 4A No. 1 North Oconee on April 18.

Around the class, boys – The Top 5 of the boys baseball rankings are absolutely stacked with talent. Top-ranked and nine-time champion Harlem has won the past two Class 3A titles and is 19-0 on the year and will travel to Aquinas Friday with hopes for its 20th victory. No. 2 LaGrange has waited 21 years since its last and only state title in Class 3A in 2004. But the Grangers are 13-7 after having faced some of the best talent in the state. LaGrange is coming off an 8-1 loss at Class 3A No. 6 Troup Wednesday and will host Troup Thursday for a chance to right the ship. Peach County is ranked No. 3 and is in a stretch of some of the best baseball in program history and could carve out a deep playoff run.

Around the class, girls – On the golf course, White County is ranked atop the class according the GHSAGolf app. The Warriors lead No. 2 Jefferson, No. 3 North Hall, No. 4 Southeast Bulloch and No. 5 Cherokee Bluff. After winning the state championship in Class 3A the past two seasons, Savannah Christian will now compete in the 1A-3A Private class. Pierce County is the last public school to win the Class 3A title in 2022 with White County winning in 2021.
