Two first-time state champions placed at the top of the podium Thursday at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center in Atlanta when the season ended for Classes 1A-3A and Class 4A at the GHSA Swimming and Diving State Championships.
The Northview boys and the Lovett girls swim teams were the first-timers.
Northview’s boys had victories in multiple team events such as the 200-yard Medley Relay (1:34.63) and the 400-yard Freestyle Relay (3:08.06) on the way to the Class 4A title. Northview’s Ashton Tan finished first in both the 100-yard Butterfly (49.37) and the 200-yard Individual Medley (1:50.61). This was the first season in seven years that Wesleyan or Westminster did not take home first prize in the classification.
The Lovett girls earned a victory in the 400-yard Freestyle Relay (3:34.28) to help put them over the top in a narrow Class 1A-3A girls swimming state championship. The Lions scored 410 points to beat second placed GAC (402.5 points). Alexis Dalton’s first place finish in the 100-yard Breaststroke (1:03.83) was instrumental in the Lions first-ever state championship victory.
For the 4A girls, Marist took home their 12th state championship and first swim title since 2021. The team scored over 200 points higher than the second place finisher in the victory. The War Eagles placed first in two relay events — the 200-yard Medley Relay (1:44.91) and the 200-yard Freestyle Relay (1:37.01). Allie Donkar placed first in the 100-yard Breaststroke (1:03:47) and placed second in the 200-yard IM (2:07.33) to add to Marist’s point total.
For the first time since 2010, the Greater Atlanta Christian boys team topped the podium in the Class 1A-3A state championships in a narrow race at the top. The boys placed first in the 200-yard Medley Relay (1:36.48) to add to the Spartans point total. James Sorensen played a big part in the Greater Atlanta Christian victory as he finished first in the 100-yard Backstroke (49.04) as well as second place in both the 100-yard Butterfly (50.37).
