The first day of practice featured a lot of running the football and Friday the offensive line worked on pass protection while quarterbacks Daniel David and Hampton McConnell took shots to their exterior weapons. The impressive North wideouts are all showing a full set of skills. Hart County’s Sean Harper has been exceptional during these sessions. During Day 1, both quarterbacks accidentally threw the football to him at the same time. Harper snagged one with his left hand and one with his right hand. The 6-foot-1 wideout made it look easy and continued making plays Day 2 as the offense worked him in on reverses and screens.
Cross Keys receiver Samuel McDade is a guy that may be under the radar on this receiving corps heading into the game. McDade is a track star and blazed the lanes with a 49.3 in the 400 meters last track season. The 5-foot-10 speedster is a sprinter in a receivers body and will keep the South defense on their heals with his elite speed.
A lot of talk is being dedicated to the receivers, but Nekyle Lundie has had an outstanding first two days and deserves recognition. Lundie’s speed is something that North offensive coordinator Tripp Allen has noticed and Allen intends on using the Lundie on reverses, screens or deep passing patterns in order to get the ball in his hands.
Centennial linebacker Chris Calhoun had another great practice and is covering a lot of ground with his 6-foot-3 frame. Saturday could be a big day for the breakout star.
When head coach Rocky Hidalgo broke down practice at the end, he reminded his team what is at stake on Saturday.
“We’ve had a great last two days, but the North vs. South rivalry in Georgia is a great one and we’ve got to go out there on Saturday and take care of business,” said Hidalgo.
Quick Hits from Day 2
The North players’ immediate grasp of the playbook allotted time for extra reps and plays to be ran that were not on the practice script.
The offense was working the plays without any cheat sheets or team wristbands and it looks like the plays will come straight from the sideline to the two quarterbacks.
Nekyle Lundie is more than just a deep threat and is one of the most complete receivers heading into Saturday’s game.
Running back Josh Bettistea looked good running routes and could see a wheel route come his way on Saturday.
Quarterbacks Daniel David and Hampton McConnell have already showcased their leadership skills on the practice field and they both look ready to steer the North team to victory.
Taquar Stewart, Darius Slayton and the North secondary showed more comfort with the coverages during team drills today and were flying to the football.
This talented North offensive line will be tested by the speed of the South team, not its size. We will see how nimble this group of giants is.
Defensive tackle Quentez Johnson has been a man on a mission and his great motor allowed him to put in a full day’s each of these first two days.
