Last season, the Norcross Blue Devils captured the first-ever GHSA Class AAAAAA title by slowing down Lovejoy, outscoring Colquitt County and Camden County and blasting South Gwinnett and Chattahoochee. The Blue Devils had a loaded backfield with quarterback Joseph Wilber and Alvin Kamara, who have each since moved on to college programs. The cupboard isn’t bare for Keith Maloof, however, as he should return running back Myles Autry and defensive end Lorenzo Carter, two of the top returning talents in the state.
No. 2 Colquitt County lost on the road to Norcross in the semifinals but returns senior quarterback Daniel Mobley and running back Maleek Lewis. Factor in head coach Rush Propst, and the Packers are a threat to capture the program’s first title since 1994.
North Cobb couldn’t keep up with the loaded offense of Lovejoy in the semifinals last year, but expect another spring and summer of maturation to go a long way towards making rising junior quarterback Tyler Queen perhaps the top dual-threat quarterback in AAAAAA. Cameron Albright is another sensational athlete that makes plays on both sides of the football.
Gwinnett has two additional teams in the top 10 in No. 4 North Gwinnett and No. 7 Peachtree Ridge, but Cobb County makes the biggest splash with No. 5 McEachern, No. 8 Walton, No. 9 Hillgrove and surprise No. 10 Wheeler. Walton lost Tyren Jones and Parker McLeod but returns Price Wilson, who saw valuable time filling in for McLeod last season when the current Alabama quarterback was out with an injury. Wheeler’s inclusion may raise eye brows, but Michael Collins’ team made the playoffs out of Region 5 last year and returns a trio of amazing seniors with QB Elijah Staley, WR Emanuel Beal and DB Allen Artis.
