News and Notes on Tonight’s Games

Valdosta and Lincoln (Fla) renew somewhat of a recent rivalry tonight at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium. The two uber-successful programs met every year from 1998-2007 with Lincoln holding a 5-3-1 edge. Usually, both teams are ranked in their respective classifications and this year is no different. The Wildcats are ranked No. 7 in Class 5A while Lincoln is No. 8 in Class 4A. … Lincoln’s offensive coordinator is former Florida WR Jacquez Green while former FSU tight end Caz Piurowski is also on the Trojans’ staff. … Wilcox County, No. 4 Clinch County and No. 1 Charlton County are all in the same region in Class A. No. 2 Wilcox and Clinch play tonight in one of three games that will decide the region champion and the playoff participants from each region. … No. 4 Westside-Macon and No. 6 Baldwin face each other tonight in the Region 2-AAA opener for both squads. Also in the region is No. 1 Peach Co., fresh off their first win in school history over Warner Robins. … What is generally referred to as the weakest Class 5A region is Region 3-AAAAA. One region program, Benedictine (0-2), has been outscored 86-19 thus far in 2010 but can vault to first place in their region with a win tonight against Windsor Forest. However, No. 1 Camden Co. lurks later in the year, but for a short time, whoever wins the game can say they are tied for first place. Last season, the top four teams in the region made the playoffs, but only Camden Co. won a game. … No. 9 Brookwood gets a test tonight from Region 8 rival Dacula, who could figure into the playoff mix later in the year. This Gwinnett matchup is under the radar this week, as there are several great games throughout the state, but it could wind up being just as important as any of them. The Broncos have won eight of the 10 meetings, but Dacula won last year’s game on their way to a playoff appearance.
