The 2012 ABCA/Rawlings NCAA Division I All-American committee named former Kennesaw State catcher Ronnie Freeman an All-South Region honoree.
Freeman is considered one of the best offensive players in the history of the Kennesaw State baseball program after three exceptional seasons with the Owls. Over his career, he recorded 242 hits (ninth all-time in KSU history), 152 RBIs (eighth), 25 home runs and 41 doubles (10th).
In 2012, the catcher had another outstanding season, recording a .352 batting average, fifth best in the Atlantic Sun conference. He also posted a .500 slugging percentage (13th) and .426 on-base percentage (seventh) while notching 74 hits (sixth) and 52 RBIs (second).
Freeman was selected in the fifth round by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the recent MLB Draft, becoming the highest-drafted KSU player since 2009 when Chad Jenkins and Kyle Heckathorn were taken in the first round.
After coming to terms on a deal with the Diamondbacks, the former Owl is now hitting .235 through his first five games professional games. Freeman is currently suiting up for the Yakima Bears, a Class A short-season affiliate for the D-Backs based out of Yakima, Wash.
SCHEDULES RELEASED …
Several teams have released schedules for the upcoming athletic season. The men’s golf team will open the year at the Carpet Capital Collegiate.
“We have scheduled some great events this season that will allow us to play against some tough competition, as well as play close to home so that our fans can come out and support us,” said head coach Jay Moseley in a team release.
The cross country teams will be competing in a five-meet regular season beginning with the Belmont Invitational on Aug. 31. The teams will travel to Tallahassee for the first time ever to compete in the Florida State Invitational.
“Our schedule was chosen to give our athletes the best chance to give strong showings and prepare for the A-Sun Championship and beyond,” head coach Ryan Wagner said on the school’s website.
