Murray County’s girls’ basketball team has a chance to avenge its only loss of the season when it faces Sonoraville Tuesday for the fourth matchup of the season, with neither team losing to any opponent since Sonoraville’s first game of the season.
Murray County has come out of the three previous matchups with the better record.
The Indians went 2-1, including a 54-52 win in the region title game. All three games have been closely contested matchups, decided by a total of just 10 points. The largest margin of victory came in the teams’ first matchup when Murray County won 54-48 in Sonoraville.
The Indians have been dominant in the playoffs so far. They opened with a 54-point victory over 32-seeded Salem. They then hosted region rival Union County, defeating them 81-42—a stark contrast to their last matchup, where Murray County survived 75-72 in double overtime.
Sonoraville has been nearly as dominant in the playoffs. In the Phoenix’s first-round matchup with Therrell, they won by 57 points in an 81-24 victory. The second round was slightly tougher, with Sonoraville defeating Hart County 59-34.
For Sonoraville, the game will come down to offense. In the Phoenix’s two losses, they had at least one quarter where they were outscored by a wide margin. In the first game, they were outscored 24-3 in the third quarter, despite outscoring the Indians by 15 in the other three quarters. In their region title loss, a six-point second quarter allowed the Indians to take control and ultimately secure the region title.
For Murray County, the key will be maintaining consistency. The team’s offense has been one of the most reliable in the state, averaging over 62.6 points per game. More importantly, they have only scored fewer than 50 points twice all season. They are 27-0 when reaching at least 50 points, with their only loss coming when they failed to hit that mark.
