Lady Dog wins top award…

By winning the Honda-Broderick Cup, an award given to the nation’s top female collegiate athlete in any sport, UGA gymnast Courtney Kupets has done something no UGA woman had ever done before. The honor marks only the second time a gymnast has won the award in its 33-year history. Coming off a torn Achilles tendon that ended her junior year, Kupets led the Gym Dogs to their fifth-consecutive NCAA team championship.

Fight to the end…

In a thrilling conclusion, Lucas Glover was able to hold off a couple of late surges from Phil Mickelson and David Duval to win the 109th U.S. Open at Bethpage Black. Glover shot a 3-over 73 on the final day, but still finished two strokes ahead of second-place finisher Ricky Barnes, who entered the fourth round in the lead before shooting a 6-over 76 to finish tied for second with Duval and Phil Mickelson. The victory marks the first time in nearly five years that Glover has won a PGA TOUR event.

Another one bites the dust…

The Atlanta Falcons signed their sixth-round draft pick in linebacker Spencer Adkins today. Adkins, from the University of Miami, is the fifth draft pick to sign with the team and leaves only Peria Jerry (Ole Miss), William Moore (Missouri), and Lawrence Sidbury as unsigned rookies. Terms of the deal are not currently available.

Local recruits to play big time football…

Etowah High School offensive tackle Reid Webster committed to Clemson today. Webster, a 6-foot-5, 270-pound, soon-to-be senior chose Clemson over Florida State, Miami, and Ole Miss. He sighted playing time, Clemson’s business school, and location as his reasons for picking the Tigers.

Walton High School defensive tackle Kyle Woestmann committed to Vanderbilt over the weekend. The 6-foot-4, 250-pounder chose the Commodores over Georgia, Florida, Boston College, Clemson, Ole Miss, and Stanford. Georgia Tech was also showing Woestmann interest, but only on the offensive side of the ball. For Woestmann, quality academics and the opportunity to play defense led to his decision.
