Monday Roundup: J-E-T-S and Vikings advance, Beat takes Heath

In a win that is sure to fire up the Jets New York bandwagon, the J-E-T-S Jets Jets Jets beat the San Diego Chargers 17-14 to advance to the AFC Championship game and will face the Colts next week in Indy. Rookie QB Mark Sanchez hit Dustin Keller 85 seconds into the fourth quarter to take the lead and on the next drive, rookie tailback Shonn Greene rumbled 53 yards for the back-breaking score, capping New York’s run of 17 straight points. Philip Rivers wasn’t done yet, scoring on a sneak to make it 17-14 but the Chargers could not recover the onside kick and the Jets ran the clock out. Rivers finished with 298 yards but two INTs and Nate Kaeding missed three field goals (36, 57, 40) including one in the final 5 minutes of the contest.  The No.5-seeded Jets hit the road once again to face No.1-seeded Indianapolis next Sunday.

Brett Favre was special Sunday, throwing for 234 yards and four TDs as the Minnesota Vikings blasted the Dallas Cowboys 34-3 to advance to the NFC title game, where the Vikes will travel to the Superdome to face the Saints of New Orleans. Meanwhile the defense got after Dallas QB Tony Romo, sacking the Cowboys signal-caller six times, forcing two fumbles and forcing an interception. After the fourth and final TD pass of Favre’s night with 1:55, former Falcon Keith Brooking ran to the Vikings sideline and told the coaching staff that the final pass was classless. Georgia’s new defensive coordinator Todd Grantham also reportedly took issue with the running up of the score, saying “what goes around comes around.” Regardless Minnesota will travel to New Orleans as the Saints made the NFC title game for the second time in four seasons.

Finally the Atlanta Beat made Tobin Heath its No.1 pick over the weekend in the Women’s Professional Soccer draft. Heath won three NCAA titles with UNC and made 19 appearances on the US Women’s National team. Heath had five goals and 10 assists for UNC last season. The Beat’s season kicks off in April.
