Monday Roundup: Falcons clipped in OT, Thrashers fall

The Atlanta Falcons started the season 4-1 but after Sunday’s OT loss to the New York Giants, the team is now 1-4 in its last five games. After trailing 17-7 at halftime and by 14 in the fourth quarter, the Atlanta Falcons rallied to force OT in the Meadowlands behind quarterback Matt Ryan’s late TD to Tony Gonzalez. Ryan was 24-46 for 268 yardsand two touchdowns. While he did not throw an interception, Ryan did have one fumble late in the first half which led to a Giants TD. Jason Snelling was productive for the Falcons with 25 carries for 76 yards and two scores. The defense however could not slow Eli Manning as the former Super Bowl MVP had a career day, passing for 384 yards and three scores. The Giants received the opening kickoff in OT and drove down far enough for a Lawrence Tynes game-winning 36-yard field goal. The Falcons are now 5-5, five games behind 10-0 New Orleans in the NFC South.

Former University of Georgia QB and No.1 overall pick by the Detroit Lions Matt Stafford lived up to the hype (at least against Cleveland) Sunday with 422 passing yards, most ever by a Lions QB, and threw for five touchdowns, including the game-winning score on the final play of the game. Stafford’s five TD passes were the most for a rookie QB since 1937 and his Lions needed every one of them to eek out a 38-37 win over the Browns. The Lions have now won two games this season after failing to win one last year. They play the Packers this Thursday on Thanksgiving. Stafford appeared to injure his left shoulder near the end of the fourth quarter but returned to throw the game-winning touchdown.

Jimmie Johnson cruised to a fourth straight NASCAR championship with a fifth-place finish in Miami-Homestead, Florida. Johnson became the first driver in NASCAR history to win the overall title four straight seasons. Johnson tied teammate Jeff Gordon in career titles, and the two trail Dale Earnhardt and Richard Petty, who both have seven.

The Atlanta Thrashers once again rallied with three third period goals but an early 2-0 hole spelled doom for the Thrashers as Tampa Bay won 4-3 in OT. The Thrashers received goals from Tobias Enstrom, Vyacheslav Kozlov, and Evander Kane to force OT, but were done in by Steve Stamkos at the 2:56 mark in OT.
