Monday Roundup: Dog Day Afternoon, Thrashers preseason announced and Lance moves up

UGA’s Howard Thompkins, a sophomore forward from Lithonia, led the USA Under-19 team to a 85-69 victory over Greece in Auckland, New Zealand. Thompkins scored a game-high 22 points. The USA improved to 4-0 overall at the FIBA Under-19 World Championships. Puerto Rico will be the next challengers for the Americans.

ROS HONORED…

The captain of Georgia’s 1980 national championship football team, linebacker Frank Ros, was named the winner of the Bill Hartman Award Monday. The Hartman award is given annually to the former UGA athlete was has demonstrated excellence in their profession and service to others, 20 or more years after graduation. Ros is an executive for the Coca-Cola Company. Only former varsity athletes with a baccalaureate degree from UGA are eligible to win the award.

 

SCHEDULE ANNOUNCED…

The Atlanta Thrashers announced their six-game 2009 preseason schedule on Monday, which included three games at Philips Arena versus the Carolina Hurricanes (Sept. 21), Nashville Predators (Sept. 23) and Tampa Bay Lightning (Sept. 27). The Thrashers will travel to Nashville, Tampa Bay and Carolina for preseason match-ups against the Predators (Sept. 17), Lightning (Sept. 18) and Hurricanes (Sept. 25). Also, the Thrashes will participate in two prospect games against the Predators against the Predators on Sept. 14 and Sept. 15 at the Duluth IceForum.

 

ARMSTRONG MAKING CHARGE…

7-time Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong is at it again. Armstrong jumped from tenth place to third place after Monday’s exciting third stage. Armstrong is looking to win a record eighth time after coming out of retirement earlier this year. Armstrong is just 40 seconds behind the leader with 18 stages left to go. Armstrong is quickly gaining on the yellow jersey, the coveted prize that goes to the race leader.
