The No. 2 Milton Eagles faced their biggest test of the season this past Tuesday, with the No. 11 Cherokee Warriors taking them to overtime, where the Eagles managed to eke out a 66-63 win to move into first place in Region 5, Class 7A.
This game was truly a game of momentum on every note. The two teams went back and forth in the first quarter, but Milton jumped out to a 10-point lead heading into halftime. Cherokee rallied back in the fourth quarter to tie the game and send it to overtime, but in the end, Milton managed to pull out the win. Head coach Allen Whitehart was very impressed with his team’s ability to pull out this tough win.
“The resilience and staying with the game plan really allowed our kids to lock in,” coach Whitehart said.
LT Overton was the top performer for Milton, notching 14 points and 17 rebounds. It was another top-notch performance for the two-sport athlete, but as is always with this team, everyone played a role in pulling out the win. Coach Whitehart credits his team’s flexibility with not only this win, but for handling all the adversity this season.
“I think under the current constraints, you have to be really flexible,” coach Whitehart said.
Pulling out this tough win over a tough team is just the beginning of a tough stretch of games for the Eagles. Yesterday, the Eagles played Woodstock on the road and walked away victorious with a 74-49 outing. And today, they will play Wheeler at home. On Tuesday, they will play Roswell on the road. Finally, next Friday, they will close out the regular season by facing Cherokee again at home.
Coach Whitehart is very much looking forward to all of these games.
“It’s a way to see where we are. It’s a way just to see how good or bad we are at that certain point,” coach Whitehart said.
