Men’s hoops wins another squeaker in second exhibition

With the start of the regular season right around the corner, the men’s basketball team needed a late surge to hold off Clark-Atlanta, 66-61, in their second exhibition. Xavier Hansboro was the only Panther in double figures with 14 points, including two free throws to clinch the win.

“It was another tough game but definitely another good learning experience, and we’re happy to come away with the win,” said head coach Rod Barnes. “Give credit to Clark-Atlanta. They came in here and played us very tough, which I knew they would.”

Leonard Mendez finished with nine points, Joe Dukes had eight points and five assists, Trey Hampton added eight points and James Fields scored seven. Chris Echols pulled down a team-high six rebounds. Najee Lane led Clark with 23 points and 11 rebounds. The Panthers open the regular season at the NABC Classic, Friday through Saturday, in Minneapolis, Minn., facing Bowling Green, Concordia-St. Paul and host Minnesota. (All games can be heard on WRAS-FM, 88.5.) One encouraging note is that Georgia State received two votes in the first Preseason CollegeInsider Mid Major Top 25 poll.

Women’s basketball plays its only exhibition game on Thursday against Georgia Southwestern. The Lady Panthers will open the regular season on Nov. 22 at Clemson.
