Men’s hoops takes down UNC-W on road; Hollins reaches 1,000-point mark

In what was a very important game, the men’s basketball team went on the road and beat UNC Wilmington in its early season CAA game, 68-46, behind Trae Goldston’s 20 points. Goldston shot 7-for-15, including 6-of-13 from behind the 3-point line and added four assists.

Trey Hampton had a breakout game with a double-double (12 points and 10 rebounds) as well as a block and three steals. Joe Dukes added 11 points, nine rebounds, six assists and three steals.

“That was the best game we’ve played for 40 minutes,” said head coach Rod Barnes. “We looked like a different team. Of course I’m very happy with the win, but I’m most satisfied that our guys came out and played with passion and aggressiveness.”

The Panthers are now 3-5 on the season, with Florida State visiting the Sports Arena on Saturday followed by a game at Georgia Tech on Dec. 17.

Congratulations to Brittany Hollins, who recently joined the ranks of the 1,000-point scorers after her performance in the Panthers’ 83-42 win over Alabama State. The senior guard scored eight points to reach the plateau while also adding five steals.  Danyiell McKeller led the way with 16 points while Dana Olsen added 14, Jylisa Williams finished with 10.

“Brittany (Hollins) is a truly unselfish player and team leader who has a complete game with her defense, her passing and her rebounding,” said head coach Lea Henry.             “She gives us so much energy on the defensive end and plays her heart out, so it is nice to see her reach yet another milestone in her career.”
