Men’s basketball adds coach; cross country competes at Disney World

Last Friday, the men’s basketball program re-hired former assistant coach Greg Matta. The former North Cobb Christian head coach and athletic director had been an assistant at Kennesaw State for four seasons prior to taking the high school position.

The men’s golf team is currently in 13th place at the Brickyard College Championship after two rounds of play in Macon. Michael Tulacz leads the team in 14th place overall after shooting a 145 in the first two rounds. Results from the final round of play on Monday were unavailable at press time.

CONFERENCE RIVALRIES

The volleyball team (2-16) dropped games to Lipscomb and Belmont during the past week, but showed signs of improvement in each. The Lady Owls took two sets from the Bruins on Friday, which was only the second time all year that Belmont (13-5) had been pushed to five sets. Chelsey Denesha led the team in kills with 14 while Ginny Frederick tallied 20 assists. On Saturday against Lipscomb, the Lady Owls lost in four sets after winning the first (23-25, 25-23, 25-23, 25-21). All four sets were very tight, however, and could have very easily gone the way of the Black and Gold. Sabrita Gulley and Chelsey Denesha each had double-doubles. The team will host USC-Upstate at 7 p.m. on Friday at the Convocation Center.

On Friday, the soccer team picked up a crucial point at Belmont (8-4, 3-1-1), drawing the Bruins 0-0. The conference game pitted the two top teams in the Atlantic Sun. Belmont held onto first place with the draw, but KSU (7-3-4, 2-1-2) kept pace in the standings by getting a point on the road. Unfortunately, the momentum created by the Belmont game came to a screeching halt on Sunday when the team was upset at home by Lipscomb (4-9-1, 2-4). The 1-0 loss marked the second straight game in which the Lady Owls were unable to score a goal despite outshooting Lipscomb by a remarkable 35-4. KSU will host East Tennessee State on Friday at 7 p.m.

RUNNING AT DISNEY

The men’s cross country team finished in fourth place at the Walt Disney World Invitational on Saturday. Scott Burley paced the team by finishing fourth overall. Steven Murray and Piotr Wiczak also ran well, finishing 31st and 35th, respectively. The Owls will race next Saturday in Chattanooga at the Front Runner Invitational, their final meet before the Atlantic Sun Championships on Nov. 1. … Mackenzie Howe finished fifth overall, leading the women’s cross country team to a ninth-place finish at the Walt Disney World Invitational. The meet included 44 total teams. Kristen Gibson finished 26th overall while Siobhan Wolcott took 43rd. The team travels to Chattanooga to compete in the Front Runner Invitational on Saturday.
