Mark it down: Five region title locks

There are no guarantees in high school football, or football in general, for that matter. But there are a handful of teams that, come November, should earn the top seeds in their respective regions. Here are a few of our (slightly premature) region champions.

Lowndes – Tonight’s matchup with Valdosta is still a big one, but Lowndes already cleared hurdle No. 1 with a convincing win over Northside last Friday. At Coffee and at Warner Robins to close the season should be Ws, and the Vikings should once again take the Region 1-AAAAA title.

Camden County – No surprise here. The perennial Region 3-AAAAA champion Wildcats will without question sport their league’s top seed in a few weeks. Jeff Herron and Company can just about count on being in position for deep playoff runs every year.

North Gwinnett – As competitive as we all thought Region 7-AAAAA would be, it’s looking like the Bulldogs will be the runaway winners despite earning the No. 2 seed behind Norcross for the last two years. The only stumbling block could come in the final game at Peachtree Ridge, but with an outright region championship in sight, don’t expect North to drop that one.

Evans – It’s taken some time for the Knights to earn respect this year (the 5-0 team is just now beginning to get some love in the polls around the state – they are just out of the top 10 in ours). Realignment was kind to Evans, as Brunswick and Ware County were assigned to Region 2-AAAA. Region 3 should be theirs for the taking.

Buford – There are four other legit teams in Region 6-AA (Lovett, Greater Atlanta Christian, Blessed Trinity and Westminster), and Buford has already blown out one of them. The last three games of the season—against GAC, Blessed Trinity and Westminster—will tell the tale, but I don’t think any of those teams need to be reminded that Buford hasn’t lost a regular season game since Sept. 2004.
