The Shaw girls started slowly at the Alvin Copeland Invitational in Macon over the weekend before finally breaking through for a big win in the 4×800-meter relay en route to a victory at the event. Shaw would also win the 4×400 relay as well as three individual events to squeeze past Carrollton for first place. Freshmen Kayla McGuire and Breeanna Mahone each captured an individual race for Shaw. Rutland won the boys competition as Brandon Bawn won the triple jump, Markiel Bowen won the shot put and Kiwbe Troup captured the 200- and 400-meter dashes. Rutland also won the 4×400 and 4×800 relays. Shaw was the overall combined winner. … Norcross swept the McEachern Invitational as the host Indians finished in sixth place (girls) and seventh place (boys). Kiyana Grimes won the girls long jump event for Norcross to open the day. Casidy Callahan would quickly give the Blue Devils another win in the discus throw. Grimes would go on to prove victorious in the 100 meter dash while Katherine Yost took home the win in the 3200-meter run. Norcross edged past Redan 94-92 in the girls competition. Redan was paced by Shequilla McClain in the 300-meter hurdles and Destiny Reid in the 800-meter run. Redan also won the 4×100 relay. The Norcross boys rallied with a win in the 300-meter hurdles by Nathan Strother then a win in the 3200-meter run by Arman Rehmann. Norcross held off Gwinnett power Brookwood to take the boys title. The Broncos scored a pair of wins in the pole vault (Reece Morrow) and Bailey Vitatoe (high jump). … McEachern showed well in the relays, taking the boys and girls 4×400. Cory Nicholls provided the host boys with a win in the 800-meter run while Christoni Wynn finished .04 seconds behind Grimes in the girls 100-meter dash. Bryce Glover won the boys triple jump. … Marist owned the 1600-meter run as Morgan Ilse won the girls event and Daniel Navarro won the boys race. … Finally, Marietta swept the Marietta Friday Night Lights events, beating out J.L. Mann for the girls title and Hillgrove for the boys crown. John Thomas (discus) and Kirvonte Benson (long jump) gave Marietta its only individual wins. Hillgrove received a pair of wins from Demetrius Duggans in the 100- and 200-meter dashes but couldn’t overcome the depth Marietta placed in each event. Mill Creek’s Tyler Woodrome was another multi-winner, earning victories in the 800- and 1600-meter events. The Marietta girls received wins from Jenessa Jackson (shot put), Elizabeth Hartley (pole vault, high jump) and Tatiyana Rayford (100-meter hurdles) to prevail. The boys won by a mere 5.5 points while the girls dominated J.L. Mann, winning by 47 points.
