Loganville running back Storm Johnson committed to LSU today, giving the Tigers the second rated rusher from the state of Georgia. Johnson, a Buford transfer, ran for 1,300 yards and 21 touchdowns in leading the Class 2A champs to the title. Oklahoma and Florida were also in pursuit of Johnson, whose choice was no surprise as he had implied before that he wanted to be a Tiger. Johnson will join fellow Georgians Brandon Worle (Troup County) and Cameron Fordham (Northview) as 2010 commitments for the Bayou Bengals.
Former Atlanta Thrashers star Marian Hossa signed a 12-year deal with the Chicago Blackhawks. The highly touted scorer had signed a one-year deal with the Detroit Red Wings, hoping to win a Stanley Cup. Instead, Hossa saw his former team, the Penguins (who had also tried to sign him) win the title in seven games against his Red Wings. The Blackhawks get a big-time scorer who has 719 career points. Hossa is expected to make around $5.2 million per season.
The Lady Jackets will host Winthrop in a first round pre-season Women’s National Invitational Tournament game at Alexander Memorial Coliseum on Nov. 13. The Jackets are one of 16 teams in the NIT tournament. The finals are slated to play on Nov. 22.
Georgia poker pro David Bach of Athens outlasted New Yorker John Hanson to win the mixed game H.O.R.S.E. title in Las Vegas at the World Series of Poker. Bach’s payout? Just a paltry $1.28 million at the World Series’ second-most prestigous event. The most prestigious is, of course, the $10,000 buy-in Texas Hold ‘em main event, which doles out sums close to $10 million. Bach’s winning hand was a nine-high Razz which ended the heads-up play and gave Bach his first World Series bracelet.
