Loran Smith injured, Thrashers re-sign three and Landers extended

UGA sideline reporter Loran Smith was injured in an automobile accident in France earlier this week. Though the accident was serious, Smith escaped with only a cut on the head, a concussion, and two broken ribs. The driver, Smith’s friend Francois Pelou, apparently dozed off at the wheel and then the Peugot they were driving flipped several times. Smith’s friend escaped uninjured. Smith is back in Athens now resting up from the injuries.

The Atlanta Thrashers continue to put pen to paper as they re-signed two restricted free agents, Scott Lehman and Grant Lewis and also signed forward Tim Stapelton. Lehman and Lewis each appeared in one game for the Thrashers, spending most of their season with the AHL affiliate Chicago Wolves. Stapelton only appeared in four games for the Toronto Maple Leafs last season.

The Bulldogs extended the contract of women’s basketball coach Andy Landers today. In the job since 1979, Landers is the only full-time women’s coach in Georgia history. The extension is good through the 2013-2014 season. UGA has has a winning record every season since becoming an official NCAA sport in 1981-1982. Last year, Landers became just the fifth women’s coach to reach the 800 win plateau.
