Living NASCAR legend returns to his roots at Dixie Speedway

Bill Elliott, legendar racer and Dawsonville native, is returning to the track where he won his first race over three decades ago. On Saturday, Oct. 25, Dixie Speedway in Woodstock will host the “Bill Elliott 50 Red Dirt Dash” late model race. Scheduled to race are Elliott himself and several other top NASCAR stars, including Tony Stewart and Kasey Kahne.

The event will benefit Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta for cancer research and treatment.

Elliot says that it’s an honor to be able to revisit the site of his first professional win. “Dixie Speedway is a special place for me because it is where I won my first race,” Elliot said. “To be able to go back and bring along some of my counterparts in NASCAR to show my appreciation to the race fans has been a goal of mine for years.”

Elliott first started racing on the Dixie Speedway track as a teenager, using homemade cars that he and his father George built in their garage. On Sept. 7, 1974, at the age of 18, he won his first race there.
