It was a great night for wrestling in Georgia, as the GHSA traditional wrestling finals capped off a sensational year for this growing sport. It was a night of firsts, lasts and sustained dominance among Georgia’s elite wrestlers. Here’s a little bit of what went down on the mats at the Gwinnett Arena on Saturday evening:
The 135-pound class offered possibly the most excitement and suspense, as Union Grove’s Joey Lazor and Walton’s Phil Holloway fighting it out in the finals, a place these two wrestlers had met before. Lazor took home the title in this instance for Class 5A Union Grove. In Single-A, Bryan Benton of Toombs County capped off a remarkable prep career with his fourth state title and 214th win.
Defending 3A 171-pound champion Terrance Gaddy of Clarkston completed an undefeated season with a win on Saturday night. Collins Hill’s Taylor Knapp surprised no one by taking care of business in the 160-pound division for 5A, taking home his third state title. Wade Farrow of Swainsboro and Jay Fowler of Jefferson went to double overtime in the Class 2A, 152-pound division, with Farrow winning in sudden death with a pin.
