Lions pick up region win, gear up for showdown with Stephenson

The football team is on a four-game winning streak and has pulled off a pair of big Region 2-AAAAA wins over the past two weeks. The Lions (5-1, 3-0) rolled over Douglass (2-4, 1-2) 41-26 on Oct. 3 and followed that up with a 56-0 victory over Newton (2-4, 1-2) last Friday night. Against Newton, junior running back Mack Brown had two rushing touchdowns, quarterback Cameron Myers threw touchdown passes to fellow juniors Cameron McClure and Corey Phillips, and senior safety Joel Kight returned an interception for a score. M.L. King has a huge region battle with Stephenson (5-1, 2-1) on Friday. … The volleyball team will be looking to pick up its first win of the season at the Area 2-AAAAA Tournament beginning on Friday. … The softball team (2-6, 0-4) finished its season on a high note with an 8-5 win over Lakeside-DeKalb on Sept. 30. It was not enough, however, to get the Lions into the region tournament, which was won by the No. 1-seeded Greenbrier Wolfpack.
