The young football team held its own but fell short, 13-3, in their season opener last Friday against Harrison. The Lions made a key special teams mistake to end the first half when a low snap on a punt put the visiting Hoyas in field goal position. Kevin Minter, a LSU commit, blocked a punt for the Lions, giving them the ball at their opponent’s 6-yard line. The offense could not put the ball in the end zone, however, and the Lions had to settle for a field goal. The Lions’ offense struggled all night, gaining just 85 yards of total offense. The defense played well, giving up 161 total yards and limiting Harrison’s returning 1,000-yard rusher Robbie Godhigh to 83 yards. The Lions travel to Lowndes this Friday to battle the reigning Class 5A state champs at 7:30 p.m. … Despite a scintillating pitching performance by Krysten Connelly (three hits and seven strikeouts), the softball team lost to North Gwinnett last Thursday 1-0 in eight innings. On Wednesday, the Lions will travel to play Duluth at 7 p.m.
