Dean Fabrizio has a superstar at quarterback in Stephen Collier. Last year as a junior, Collier passed for more than 2,000 yards, ran for another 500 yards and accounted for 33 touchdowns (27 passing, six rushing). Collier stands 6-foot-4, 210 pounds and is still growing according to Fabrizio. Luckily for Collier and Fabrizio, the quarterback will have two of the state’s top linemen watching his back this year in rising senior Jesse Freeman and rising sophomore Chris Barnes. Freeman and Barnes took part in last weekend’s MVP Camp in Atlanta and Rusty Mansell was highly complimentary of each tackle.
Mansell noted in a piece for Dawgs247, Freeman is “the real deal.” Fabrizio said he was outstanding early on in the camp and Mansell praised Freeman for his ability to handle defensive tackle Chris Williams of Sandy Creek in consecutive reps.
Mansell has also high on Barnes, who he said “created a lot of buzz on Saturday.” Barnes, who is still just a freshman, was able to go against one of the state’s top rising seniors in Bryson Allen-Williams. “He had the four best reps of the camp against (him),” said Mansell. Barnes is still growing but showed well with his long arms and good feet, per Mansell. “He is going to be a big-time recruit in the next three years.”
Freeman measures out at 6-foot-4, 311 pounds and was named Top OL at the Atlanta MVP Camp. Barnes is 6-foot-4, 250 pounds and still growing.
Lee County won its first six games in 2012 before entering the playoffs with a 7-3 record. The Trojans fell to eventual semifinalist Whitewater in the first round of the playoffs. With the talent returning in Leesburg, especially up front, a long run in the postseason could be in the cards for Frabrizio, Collier, Freeman and Barnes.
