Lassiter pulled off the improbable by upsetting the three-time and defending state champions Lambert 10-5 to win the second title in program history on Saturday night at Lakewood Stadium.
The Trojans struck first on a Choice Mostellar goal with 7:05 left in the first quarter after he cut from behind the net to place the ball in the lower right corner. Junior Colvin Prosser scored at the 4:37 mark after catching a high rebound off of a John McCormack shot and shooting a bouncing ball past the goalkeeper. Prosser scored again just before the end of the quarter to make the lead 3-0. Just before the buzzer, Lambert’s Bradley Wehman scored on a 15-yard rocket to cut into the lead.
It took only a few minutes in the second quarter for Lassiter to extend the lead on a Justin Edwards shot with 8:47 left in the half. Just 1:30 later, Lassiter’s Nolan Moon scored on a jump-shot to improve the lead 5-1. With 5:21 left in the half, Lambert’s Alex Walker scored on a quick strike to pull the Longhorns to within three goals at 5-2. Just three minutes later, Moon struck again to pad the lead at 6-2.
A weather delay was issued shortly after halftime as lightning moved into the area. The delay lasted 90 minutes and the teams were able to start the second half just after 7:30 p.m.
After a rest, Lassiter kept the momentum going as Moon scored again just a minute into the third quarter from eight yards. Lambert’s Eric Overbay, a Villanova commit, scored at the 9:44 mark but just two minutes later, Mostellar answered to pad the lead. Kyle Lewis cut into the lead on a 2-yard shot at the four-minute mark but yet again, Lassiter’s organized offensive strategy found answers.
With 3:00 remaining in the third quarter, Moon scored on a Mostellar assist to make the lead 9-4. With 5:16 left in the fourth quarter, Prosser scored again to put away the game.
Toward the end of the third quarter, Lassiter’s goalkeeper, Dominic MacJack, went down after taking a hard shot to the knee and was replaced by sophomore goalkeeper Cooper Conrad. The moment that could have been the beginning of a comeback was dashed when Conrad made several clutch saves down the stretch and calmly cleared the ball, protecting the lead.
Girls: Milton 13, Cambridge 4
The Milton Lady Eagles won their 11th state lacrosse championship after moving past Cambridge on Saturday at Lakewood Stadium.
Cambridge struck first on a 10-yard strike from junior Claire Xiao but would only hold the lead for roughly 10 minutes when Milton’s Sophia Baez, an Ohio State commit, connected from a few yards out to even the score 1-1.
At 9:16, Milton took the lead on a rebound goal and then Baez, a senior attacker, hit her stride and scored at the 9:16 and 4:56 marks to expand the lead to 4-1. She finished with five goals. Cambridge attacker Bella Dora scored with 3:42 remaining off a Claire Xiao assists to cut into the lead.
Milton senior Hannah Demis made the most of the last few minutes of the opening half as she found the net with 2:39 remaining to add to the lead. With seven seconds left, Demis found an opening on a left-to-right cut and placed the ball perfectly in the top right of the net to make the score to 6-2 at half.
Dora scored with 22:12 remaining to cut into the 6-3 lead before Baez scored just a minute later to dash the chances of a comeback. Another minute later, Milton senior Kelly Hyman scored on a left-to-right cut, placing the ball off of the top pipe.
Cambridge’s Dora scored with 14:54 remaining but it would be the last for the Lady Bears. Lexie Morton padded the Milton lead with a goal at the 18:14 mark. Courtney Hutchinson added three goals within the last 15 minutes and Baez added another to put away the game for Milton.
The Lady Eagles won four state titles from 2005-08, another six from 2010-15 and Saturday made it No. 11.
