Lakeside-Evans shakes up Region 2-AAAAA

Lakeside Panthers Vikings

There are underdogs across the state that pull off upsets each week, but only few teams become what we refer to as ‘giant slayers’. After starting 1-3, Lakeside-Evans topped previously unbeaten Houston County 24-20 Week 6, before spoiling Jones County’s perfect season with a 35-16 win this past Friday. Lakeside’s impressive victories have leveled out the Region 2 playing field and now four teams sit with one loss heading into Week 8. Jones County, Northside-Warner Robins, Warner Robins, Houston County are the one-loss teams and Evans and Lakeside-Evans are in the thick of the playoff race with just two region losses. Division B, Region 4-AAAAA features all six teams with 1-1 region records.

Region wins are always hard to come by in Class AAAAAA’s Region 1. Valdosta handed Camden County a 13-10 loss on Friday. The win is huge for Valdosta, which has jumped to No. 3 in Class AAAAAA. and matched last year’s win total with its 6-0 start.

Region 5-AAAAAA has had plenty of intriguing storylines this season and Friday could’ve been the wildest weekend yet. Wheeler handed Roswell its first loss of the season, while winning its first region game of the year. Walton, which was searching desperately for a win after having to forfeit three of its wins this year, was overwhelmed by an 0-4 Pope team. The Greyhounds went into Raider Valley and topped Walton 44-36, sending the Raiders to 1-5 overall and 1-3 in region play.

Cherokee and Milton are two of the four one-loss teams sharing a lead at the top of Region 5 and the two teams square off this weekend in a huge Class AAAAAA showdown. Cherokee handed Woodstock its first loss of the season to the tune of 42-21 on Friday with its explosive offense that has averaged a region-best 40 points per game this year.
