The 2008 CAA women’s soccer preseason coaches poll has been released and Georgia State has been picked to finish 10th in the 12-team race. The Panthers open the season on Saturday when they host Tennessee Tech at the Panthersville Athletic Complex. Said head coach Domenic Martelli, “Our returning players have come in healthy, with a great attitude, and have been very positive. The core of our team is the senior class and they have to carry us.” The team finished the season 9-8-1 last year including a 4-6-1 record in the CAA. William & Mary, James Madison and Hofstra, who each advanced to the second round of the NCAA Women’s Soccer Championship a year ago, are expected to battle for the CAA title again this season.
The preseason CAA volleyball polls have been released as well and Georgia State is picked to finish eighth in the 10-team league. Last year’s team finished with a record of 16-14 and returns eight letterwinners. The team has two seniors (Michelle Trimble and Liz Schaab) and one junior (Jocelyn Waldern). Five sophomores return along with four newcomers.
The men’s soccer team dropped its first exhibition match of the season 2-1 last Saturday to Georgia Southern in Statesboro. Midfielder Linus Warendh scored the Panthers’ only goal. They will play another exhibition game Saturday at the University of Alabama-Birmingham.
Georgia State baseball players Derek Simmons and Nick Hogan recently finished their summer season playing with the Wilson Tobs of the Coastal Plain League (CPL). The Panther duo helped lead the Tobs to a 31-25 regular season record. Hogan started 31 games in centerfield for Wilson before suffering a broken hand. He finished third on the team in hitting (.268) amongst Tobs players who started 30 games or more. He also was 7-for-10 in stolen base attempts and had a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage. Simmons, who joined the team following its 12th game, went on to start 40 of the team’s final 43 games. For the season, Simmons batted .266 (fourth among players who started 30 or more games) and was second on the team with eight doubles.
