The KSU women’s basketball team continued the recent “revenge” theme within the school‘s basketball program by defeating Troy University 64-58 on Wednesday night in Troy, Ala.
The men’s team has defeated three teams in a row that they lost to last season, prompting “revenge” references around campus.
The Lady Owls (1-4) led the game most of the way and withstood a late 7-0 rally by the Lady Trojans to grab their first win of the season. Last season, Troy staged a late comeback to defeat the black-and-gold on a buzzer-beater 58-57 at the Convocation Center.
Head coach Colby Tilley remarked prior to the game that his team wanted to return the favor.
“We played them last year and they beat us at the buzzer, so we’re hoping we can go back down there and return the favor,” said Tilley.
The win has to come as a relief for Tilley and his charges, as they had started out the season with four straight losses against tough competition. Two of the losses came to UNC and Georgia Tech, which are thought to be two of the better programs in the powerful ACC this year. The Lady Owls’ previous game was a disappointing 86-79 loss to College of Charleston, which is a team many thought KSU could handle at home.
The story of the year thus far for the Black and Gold has to be the stellar play of freshman guard Angie Smith, who led the team with 15 points and three steals tonight. Smith added five rebounds and committed no turnovers in 26 minutes of action. Coming into the game, the Hollywood, Fla., native was fourth on the team in scoring with 7.5 points per game.
The Lady Owls will now take ten days off for final exams before opening the conference schedule with USC-Upstate on the 13th. KSU will then play four non-conference games, including a road trip to Clemson, prior to the New Year. Then, starting on Jan. 5 with a trip to Campbell, the Lady Owls will begin a long stretch of Atlantic Sun play that will last until late February.
