Although the volleyball team has struggled this season, one of the bright spots has been the play of sophomore Ashley Jones. Jones took home CAA Player of the Week honors for her efforts last week, when she registered two consecutive triple-doubles in a week that saw the Panthers notch their first win of the season over CAA foe UNC-Wilmington. In the win at Wilmington, Jones tallied a season-high 19 kills, 18 assists and 11 digs in the five-set victory. In a hard-fought loss against Mercer, Jones piled up 13 kills, 15 assists and 15 digs for her first career triple-double.
Mark Steeds has earned CAA Runner of the Week honors after placing sixth overall among the 225 scoring men’s runners (294 total finishers) and 33 teams in the Greater Louisville Classic last Saturday. Georgia State finished seventh overall and Steeds set a personal-best time of 24:13 on the 8K course.
TIME TO SERVE
It was a pretty successful weekend for men’s tennis’ Nejc Podkrajsek at the GT Fall Invitational. He was the No. 1 seed in the flight A singles draw, and matched up against Furman’s Jordan Walters in the Round of 32 on Friday. Podkrajsek swept Walters 6-3, 6-2 to advance to the Round of 16. Podkrajsek then came from behind to defeat UGA’s Drake Bernstein 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 in the Round of 16 and defeated Armstrong Atlantic’s Eudaldo Bonet 6-4, 0-6, 6-2 in the quarterfinals. In the semifinal round, he trumped Auburn’s Lucas Marsoun 6-4, 6-2, but fell 6-3, 6-2 in the finals to UGA’s Jamie Hunt.
Softball coach Bob Heck recently announced the addition of Roger Kincaid to his coaching staff. Kincaid has worked as the manager of Xtreme Mavericks of Georgia Gold Softball for the past three years and at Union Grove High School in McDonough, Ga., where he was named the Varsity Softball Community Coach. Roger has coached in the Atlanta area for a number of years,” Heck remarked. “Because he has been in the area for so long, he will be a tremendous asset for recruiting. He knows the ball players in the area and they, in turn, know and respect him.”
LADY PANTHERS SQUEAK BY
Kay Harbrueger scored a game-winning overtime goal on an assist from Lani Huntley to push the women’s soccer team over Towson 2-1 in double overtime last Sunday in Baltimore. “Today was a great win for us and the program,” said Georgia State head coach Domenic Martelli. “It’s the first time we’ve won back-to-back CAA games on the road, and it’s huge for us to get to .500 [in the conference].” The win moves Georgia State to 10-5-0 (3-3-0). Men’s soccer fell to Drexel 2-1 in Philadelphia last Saturday.
Volleyball lost to James Madison in four sets despite Rachel Boryc’s fourth consecutive double-double. Freshman Torrie Brown scored a career high 15 kills.
