In a shocking move, Hebron Christian has announced Wednesday morning that Jonathan Gess has decided to step down from his position as head football coach. Gess will be taking up a role in South Carolina at Southside Christian School in Greenville.

Gess served as the school’s head football coach for three seasons, and led the Lions to a 12-2 record and their first-ever GHSA State Championship victory in school history this season, defeating Prince Avenue Christian, 56-28.

During Gess’ three-year stretch with the school, he accumulated a 27-10 record to go along with an 187-49 record in his 18-year career as a coach.

Gess has been a head coach since 2007, when he spent 15 seasons at Eagle’s Landing Christian, leading the Chargers to great success with six Class A state titles as well as 11 Region 5-Class A region titles.

In a press release from Hebron Christian on Wednesday morning, Gess stated:

“The past three years at Hebron Christian Academy have been truly special, and I am deeply grateful for the incredible people I’ve met and the amazing opportunities I have experienced at HCA. However, the Lord is leading me to a new chapter, one centered on putting family first. After 18 years of coaching football in Georgia, I sense God calling me to prioritize my wife, Dee, and serve her as Christ loves the Church. While it’s difficult to leave behind the success and community we’ve built, we feel called to return to South Carolina, a state where I grew up and we both attended college. We feel like God has called us to Southside Christian School in Greenville, South Carolina, and we look forward to what God has in store for us in this next chapter of our lives.”
