Marques Johnson, a 6-5 guard who started six games at NC State last season, has enrolled at Georgia State as a transfer and joined the men’s basketball team, head coach Rod Barnes announced Monday. He will sit out the 2008-09 season and then have two years of eligibility beginning in 2009-10.
Johnson played in 21 games for the Wolfpack last winter and averaged 2.0 points, 1.6 rebounds and 1.2 assists while playing about 15 minutes a game.
A native of Fort Wayne, Ind., Johnson originally enrolled at Tennessee as a freshman in the fall of 2006. He played in four games for the Volunteers and averaged 2.0 points and 1.3 assists before moving to NC State in January 2007.
“Marques is a great addition to our program as an outstanding player, student and person,” said Barnes, who had recruited Johnson out of high school when he was the head coach at Ole Miss. “His situation is somewhat unique because he is transferring for the second time. We are confident that he fits the chemistry of our program, in addition to being a talented player.
“He gives us another long, athletic guard who can play our style, both offensively and defensively.”
Johnson attended Snider High School, where he was coached by Ray Sims. A two-time all-state selection and all-conference selection, he led his school to a 50-15 record over his final three seasons, including the sectional championship his senior year. He averaged 15.1 points, 7.0 rebounds and 3.3 assists as a senior, when he was honored as the top player in his conference. As a junior, he averaged 21.0 points, 6.2 rebounds and 4.0 assists.
Johnson was rated the No. 42 prospect in the Class of 2006 by Scout.com.
