John Mohring steps down as Savannah Country Day head football coach for same role with Wayne County

John Mohring, the head football coach for Savannah Country Day for the past three seasons has stepped down to become the new head coach of the Wayne County football program, per Dennis Knight of the Savannah Morning News.

Mohring had a 16-16 record while he was the head coach of Savannah Country Day and made the playoffs twice in his tenure. The Hornets lost in the second round of the Class A-Private Division in 2021 and last season, lost in the first round of the Class 3A playoffs.

In his three seasons as the Hornets head coach, Mohring’s Savannah Country Day teams improved its production every year scoring more points and not letting up as many scores while improving their record year after year. In 2021, his first season with the program, the Hornets scored only 229 points and let up 302 in the season and went 4-7. Their improvement was noticeable in 2023 as they went 7-4 and scored 380 points while only allowing 197.

The former Savannah Country Day head coach now takes over a Wayne County team that finished with a 7-4 record in 2023 and lost in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs. The Yellow Jackets finished with their first 10-win season in 2022 since 2018 where they went 11-1 and won the Region 2-Class 5A Championship.

Mohring is taking over for former Wayne County head football coach Jaybo Shaw, who stepped down in Feb. 2024 to fill the head coaching vacancy at Greenville High School.
